GROUP STUDY PRESENTATION

Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Lucena - BSSW

Field Instruction I
January 2023
THE AGENCY
The Bachelor of Science in Social Work department in Dalubhasaan
ng Lungsod ng Lucena is a school department that focuses on
responding to the needs and concerns of Social Works students in
their education. It also promotes the maximum and holistic
development of Social Work students by supporting intra and extra-
curricular programs, projects, and activities to the needs of the Social
Work students. Unleashing and building students’ self-esteem is one
of the methods of helping students to develop and prepare themselves
for their aspiring profession and future.
BACKGROUND
Currently, the Department of Social Work has 289 students for
the Academic Year 2022-2023. However, the Social Work
Affiliates selected five (5) members from the First Year level to
participate in the group work session. The intake forms of the
incoming first year students served as a basis for identifying a
common ground for a possible list of clientele. The selected
members for group work ranged from 18 to 20 years old. The
group is composed of five (5) members, three members are from
Section 1A, and two members are from Section 1B of the Social
Work Department (BSSW).
CONT.

In preparation for the group work session, the Social Work Affiliates
decided to have a developmental approach by understanding and
discovering their strengths and weaknesses. The Social Work
Affiliates had little knowledge that these students lack socialization
skills which is an essential skill for a Social Work student. Thus,
decided that the group will go through activities that will enhance
their socialization skills while allowing them to increase their self-
esteem and self-awareness.
ASSESSMENT OF THE CASE

The members of the group somehow know each other by name

because they are all in the same department and same year
level, but they are not really familiar with each and every other.
During the first and second meetings, they seem shy and
awkward. They don’t look too comfortable. They barely talk with
each other. However, as the group work sessions continue, they
became more comfortable and built companionship, relationship,
and trust towards each other including the Social Work Affiliates.
ASSESSMENT OF THE CASE

The objective of this Group Work is to develop self-awareness

and enhance the self-confidence of the group members through
socializing with each member and by doing the prepared
activities all throughout the seven sessions. The members also
admitted that they struggle to speak in front of large groups of
people, particularly at school, because they were dominated by
nervousness.

RECOMMENDATIONS/PROGRESS OF THE CASE
The social work affiliates recommend that clients be given more
mediums and platforms to showcase their talents and skills,
particularly in the arts. This kind of opportunity for clients will help
and enable them to increase their self-esteem by showing their
passion and talents. Additionally, the social work affiliates
observed that some of the clients are part of the vulnerable sector.
Therefore, affiliates recommend that clients be able to be referred
to agencies that provide the assistance they require.
The last group work session took place on December 12,
alongside the mini graduation and termination. Improvements
were observed in their interaction and relationships, as well as
their self-esteem in speaking and performing.
MAJOR ISSUES ENCOUNTERED

 Schedule and availability of the clients

 Shyness of clients in the initial meetings
