Analysis of Structures

Analysis of Structures – is a process of determining how

loads applied to a structure are distributed throughout the
structure (e.g. Truss and Frames)

Truss
 is a structure composed of members fastened
together in such a way as to resist change in shape.
 Loads are assumed to be acting at the joints.
 rigid structure
 members are two-force member
 members may be in tension or compression
 internal force is directed along the line of axis of
the bar
Pin connected type – bars are fastened by smooth bolts.

Analysis of Trusses
1.) method of joint
2.) method of section

Method of Joints
 Uses the principle of equilibrium of concurrent force system
 In method of joints, consider a joint with two unknown members utmost.
 If force is directed towards the joint, that force is a compression force.
 If force is directed away from the joint, that force is a tension force.
Problem:
Compute the force in each member

Solution:
Problem:
Using the method of joints, determine the force in
each member of the truss shown. State whether
each member is in tension or compression.
Solution:
Method of Sections
 Uses the principle of equilibrium of non-concurrent force system
 Uses section plane to determine the unknown members.
Problem:
Compute for the force in members DB, BC and AC.

Solution:
Problem:
The structure shown is pinned to the floor at A
and H. Determine the magnitude of all the
support forces acting on the structure and find
the force in member BF.
Solution:

Member GH is axial hence; it can only

transmit vertical force to the support at
H.

Using section b-b, you can check the

values of the reaction at A and H.
METHOD OF MEMBERS (Frames)

Frame – some or all the members of a pin-connected structure are subjected to

bending action because of the loads applied along their length in addition to the loads
at their ends.

Method of section is not feasible to analyze frame, instead, we consider the separate
free-body diagram of each member subjected to bending.

Apply Newton’s third law (actions and reactions) when setting up the free body
diagrams.
Problem:
Determine the horizontal and vertical components of B as its acts
upon member CD. (Specify the directions)
Solution:

FBD of CD FBD of AB
Problem:
For the frame shown, determine the resultant hinge forces at B, C, and E.
Solution:
