Industrial Color Sorting Systems

This document presents a project on developing a color sensing and sorting system using Arduino boards and servo motors. The objective is to automatically sort objects by color in an efficient and accurate manner for industrial applications. It describes the working of a color sensor to detect the color of an object and signal the appropriate servo motor to move the object to its corresponding location. The system was tested and able to successfully distinguish and sort objects by red, green and blue colors.

Objective:
• To know about Arduino boards and servo motors
• To know and understand about the colour sensor
• To study the working principle of colour sensors
• To test the performance of colour sorter
• To minimize the time and errors for sorting objects in
industries
Abstract:
• As the name suggests, colour sorting is simply to sort the things
according to their colour. It can be easily done by seeing it but
when there are too many things to be sorted and it is a repetitive
task then automatic colour sorting machines are very useful.
• These machines have colour sensor to sense the colour of any
objects and after detecting the colour servo motor grab the thing
and put it into respective box. They can be used in different
application areas where colour identification, colour distinction
and colour sorting is important.
Block Diagram:
Working:

• First, the object is classified based on its colour using a colour

sensor. The colour sensor used in this project is TCS3200. It
detects the colour of the object and gives the Arduino nano a
specific code number.
• Arduino nano compares the code to the stored data and
provides a specific output related to the input. Finally, the
controller gives the command to the mechanical assembly to
place the object at the specified location.
Software and Hardware Tools
Software Tools:
• Arduino IDE
Hardware Tools:
• Arduino Uno
• Colour Sensor-TCS230
• Servo Motors
• Power Supply
Advantages:
• More accuracy.
• Higher efficiency.
• Better precision as margin of error is reduced to greater extent.
• High degree of intelligence.
• Low failure rate with longer life.
• Reliable operation.
• Fully automatic operation.
• Low maintenance
Applications:
• In pharmaceutical industries for sorting tablets or capsules according
to colours.
• In hardware industries to sort metallic and non-metallic objects.
• In food industry to identify rotten fruits and vegetables.
• In small scale and large scale industries, to sort the products based on
the various parameters e.g. colour.
• In production units to scan and identify the defects in raw materials
Result:
The colour sorter was able to distinguish among red ,green ,blue colours
Successfully . Upon sensing the colours the bottom servo motor rotates
to the specific positions for each colour as programmed in the Arduino.
