Abstract

The configuration of an electric vehicle involves the design and arrangement

of the various components that make up the vehicle's powertrain, as well as its
energy storage system. The electric motor is responsible for converting
electrical energy stored in the battery pack into mechanical energy to power
the vehicle's wheels. The power controller manages the flow of electrical
energy from the battery pack to the electric motor, regulating the motor's
speed and torque output. The battery pack stores the electrical energy that
powers the motor and can be charged from an external power source, such as
a charging station or a wall socket. Overall, the configuration of an electric
vehicle is optimized to maximize efficiency, minimize energy consumption,
and provide a smooth and responsive driving experience.
INTRODUCTION

 Electric vehicles use an electric motor for traction and chemical batteries, fuel cells.
 The EV has many advantages over the conventional internal combustion engine vehicle
(ICEV) such as
 absence of emissions
 high efficiency
 independece from petroleum
 quiet and smooth operation.
 The operational principle in EVs and ICEVs
are similar there are however, some difference
such as
 The use of a gasoline tank versus batteries,
 ICE versus electric motor and
 differet transmission requirements
DEFINITION OF EV

 All electric vehicles use a battery pack to store electrical energy that
powers the motor. Electric Vehicles are also known as battery electric
vehicle.
 The charging of the battery of an

EV can be done by plugging it.

Since there is no tail pipe emission,

EV’s are considered as the zero

emissions vehicles.
EV CONFIGURATION

Compared to HEV, the configuration of EV is flexible. The reason for this

flexibility are:
 The energy flow in EV is mainly via flexible electric wires rather than
bolted flanges or rigid shafts. Hence, distributed subsystems in the EV are
really achievable.
 The EVs allow different propulsion arrangement such as independent four
wheels and in wheel drives.
PRIMARY EV POWER TRAIN
THE EV HAS THREE MAJOR
SUBSYSTEMS:

1. Electric propulsion sub-system

2. Energy source sub-system
3. Auxiliary sub-system
CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATION OF
GENERAL EV CONFIGURATION
POSSIBLE EV CONFIGURATIONS

 Conventional driveline with multi-gear transmission and clutch

 Single gear transmission without need of a clutch

 Integrated fixed gearing and differential

 Two separate motors and fixed gearing with their drive shaft
 Direct drive with two separate motors and fixed gearing

 Two separate in-wheel motor drives

POSSIBLE EV CONFIGURATION
PERFORMANCE OF EV
ADVANTAGES

 High Performance and Low Maintenance.

 EV motors are quiet and smooth.

 The future of driving is electrical.

 No fuel, No pollution.

 We can charge at home.

 Less Running cost than gasoline powered vehicle.

 It helps to save fossil fuels.

DISADVANTAGES

 It is quite Expensive.

 Not for long range travelling because availability of less number of electric
charging power station.
 It requires more time for recharging the battery.
CONCLUSIONS

 The configuration of an electric vehicle is a crucial factor in its

performance, range, and efficiency.
 Different types of electric vehicle configurations offer different advantages
and disadvantages, depending on the specific use case.
 The choice of configuration will depend on factors such as range
requirement, charging infrastructure, and budget.
 As the technology continues to advance,

it is likely that we will see more diverse electric

vehicle configuration in the future
