Abstract
4

 Magnetic levitation is a method by which repulsion force of a magnet is utilized to obtain mechanical rotary motion. The principal
advantage of a magnetic levitation windmill over a conventional windmill is that mechanical friction is completely eliminated due
to absence of drive mechanism. That makes the rotation possible in very low wind speeds.

 The goal of this project is to build the vertical axis wind turbine to generate electricity by using wind energy and magnetic energy.
This type of vertical axis wind turbine will generate electricity by using generator or alternator, by the application of magnetic
levitation concept. This wind turbine is designed to withstand all the forces by wind and keeps rotating even at low wind force.
This type of vertical axis wind turbines has three wings. The wings are designed to accept wind from any directions.

 Hence in the current attempt, the property of magnets that like poles of different magnet repel other and unlike poles attracts each
other is taken into consideration. This attraction-repulsion property gives the good starting torque so that the turbine will tend to
rotate continuously irrespective of wind availability.

WHAT IS MAGLEV ?
5

 Maglev = Magnetic Levitation

 Operates on the repulsive characteristics of permanent magnets.

 By placing these two magnets on the top of the each other with like polarities facing each other, the magnetic

repulsion will be strong enough to keep both magnets at a distance away from each other.

 The force created can be used for suspension purposes and is strong enough to balance the weight of an object

depending on the threshold of the magnets.

LITERATURE SURVEY

 Mayur Patel, et al. [1] presented a paper titled, „Design, Analysis & Fabrication of Maglev Vertical Axis Wind Turbine‟. This
paper presents magnetic pressure is used to counteract the effects of the gravitational and any other accelerations. The principal
advantage of a maglev windmill from a conventional one is, as the mechanical friction is totally eliminated. That makes the
rotation possible in very low wind speeds, which is the new direction to improve the performance of wind turbines. In this project
work, magnetically levitated (maglev) wind turbines are designed and developed. The choice for the model is to showcase its
efficiency in varying wind conditions as compared to the traditional horizontal axis wind turbine and contribute to its steady
growing popularity for the purpose of mass utilization in the near future as a reliable source of power generation.

 Dinesh N Nagarkar et al.,[2] carried out study on construction and working of magnetic levitation based power plant which has
colossal structure where blades were placed vertically along the outer rim of the cylinder. Since the whole assemblage was
levitated by permanent magnets there was no friction which allowed the wind turbine to transform all the wind energy into

6 electrical energy thus increasing output and reducing cost. The benefit of having it floating in midair is that it cuts down on the
friction that causes so much inefficiency in the traditional windmill. It would also increase generation capacity by 20% over
conventional wind turbines and decrease operational costs by 50%. It reduces maintenance costs and increases the lifespan of the
generator. Magnetic levitation is an important development to reduce stress from the mechanical load on the wind turbine.

LITERATURE REVIEW

 Aravind CV et al.,[3] carried design procedure and analysis of vertical axis wind turbine using magnetic levitation where gears were
replaced with direct drive technology, thereby reducing the maintenance and power loss. Bearing were replaced with magnetic levitation.
From the analysis he concluded that the introduction of maglev to the VAWT increases the efficiency and reduces the vibration with by
30% compared to that of the turbine without mechanical bearing.

 Kamalinni et al.,[4] paper presented the design component aspects of a Magnetically levited Vertical Axis Wind Turbine and reported
the result analysis using an modified magnetic circuit. A dual magnetic surface was attached into the structure through an external
mechanical structure to reduce the mechanical oscillations. The system was then investigated with and without the maglev structure. It is
found that the vibrations are reduced by 37.5%.

 B. Bittumon et al.,[5] carried out research on combined savonius and darrieus rotors which is very scarce. He designed and analyzed a
Maglev VAWT using a combined savonius and darrieus vertical axis wind turbine would have many advantages over an individual
savonius or darrieus rotor. A savonius produces high torque which would be useful in self-starting and darrieus rotor having a high tip
speed ratio useful for electrical generation. This developed a two bucket savonius rotor and placed it on the central shaft of a traditional
darrieus. Using a counter rotating wind turbine with a freely rotating generator can produce higher amounts of power than common wind
generators.

Problem Formulation

 In the early part of the century, coal was the dominant source of energy.

 The most acute problem with large oil consumption is the environment concerns associated with oil, i.e. the green house effect.

 The wind as a fuel for producing electricity is inexhaustible, free and always available somewhere, and there is enough of it.

 Increasing blades size adds extra weight to the blades, leading to higher centrifugal and inertial force that the blade must be able to

resist.

 In vertical axis wind turbines main axis is perpendicular to the ground, they accept wind from any direction.

 Maglev technology serves as an efficient replacement for ball bearings used on the conventional wind turbine and is usually

implemented with permanent magnets. MECH, SIETK

CONCLUSION ON LITERATURE REVIEW
13

 On study of various journals related to vertical axis wind turbine, it has been identified that combination of magnetic

levitation with vertical axis wind turbine has not identified. So we initiate to work on it to create an hybrid vertical

axis wind turbine powered by both wind and magnetic energy to obtain constant output irrespective wind

availability and analyse its performance under various aspects to obtain optimized results.
