Process Control and Instrumentation CB308: Barometers

The document discusses different types of barometers used to measure air pressure. It describes how a mercury barometer works by balancing the weight of mercury in a glass tube with atmospheric pressure. Other barometers mentioned include aneroid, precision digital, and MEMs pressure sensor barometers. The document also covers the typical ranges and accuracy of different barometer types as well as their advantages, disadvantages, and applications.

BAROMETER
 Italian Scientist Evangelista Torricelli invented the barometer in 1643.
 A barometer is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air
pressure in a certain environment. Pressure tendency can forecast
short term changes in the weather.
 A barometer is kept at the same level and measures slight pressure
changes caused by weather.
 The average atmospheric pressure on the earth's surface: 940-1040
hectorPa (mbar).
 The average atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1013 hectoPa (mbar).
Working Principle of Barometer
working of a barometer depends on balancing
mercury weight in the glass tube with respect to the
atmospheric pressure. If the weight of the mercury is
less than atmospheric pressure, the mercury level
will increase.
Mercury barometer working

• A tall closed tube placed upside-down in a mercury

bath, which is a thick liquid metal at room
temperature, creates the basic kind of barometer,
with the liquid rising partially up the tube like it
does in a thermometer.
• We use mercury instead of water for barometers
because it is denser. Since water is less dense than
mercury, it will be lifted up a tube by air pressure
much greater than the same volume of mercury
since it is less heavy.
Types of barometer
 Mercury barometer
 A mercury barometer is a device that uses the various physical properties of mercury
contained in a tube to measure barometric pressure, also known as air pressure or
atmospheric pressure.

 Range: 29.6-30.2in hg

 Accuracy: ±0.03% to ±0.001% of full scale reading.

 Aneroid barometer: An aneroid barometer is based on a flexible metal

compartment containing air at reduced pressure, connected to a needle that points to
a calibrated circular scale.

 Accuracy: 0.07% of reading.

 Range: 890 to 1050 mbar

Precision Digital Barometer :Range: 8 to 17 psia (~560 to 1170 mbar)
Alternate Ranges: 17 to 34 in Hg @ 0C
The accuracy can be as high as 0.008% of reading.

MEMs pressure sensor : These devices combine small mechanical and electronic
components on a silicon chip.
Accuracy :1% to 5% of reading
