History
• The Isneg, also Isnag or Apayao, live at the northwesterly end of
northern Luzon, in the upper half of the Cordillera province of
Apayao. The term “Isneg” derives from a combination of is, meaning
“recede,” and uneg or “interior.” Thus, it means “people who have
gone into the interior.”

THE SIGNIFICANT EVENT OF THE TRIBE
• The most significant event in the history of the Isneg tribe is the
signing of the Pudtol Treaty in 1903. This treaty ended centuries of
conflict between the Isneg and the Ilongot people and established
the Isneg as a distinct tribal group in the area. The treaty also led to a
period of peace and prosperity for the Isneg people and set the
groundwork for future tribal relations.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION
• THE DANCE HISTORY OF THE ISNEG TRIBE
• Traditionally, Isneg dances are performed in honor of the spirits of
their ancestors. They are also used to celebrate special occasions,
such as weddings, harvests, courtship and other important events.
The Isneg have a variety of dances, including the Apayao courtship
dance, the Pinnati, the Kalabaw, and the Pama-Ndah.

THE APAYAO COURTSHIP DANCE
• History: the Apayao Courtship Dance is an important part of the
culture of the Apayao people, and is a source of pride for them. The
dance is said to have originated from the women of the Kalinga tribe,
who used it as a way to catch the attention of suitors.
Time signature: The Apayao Courtship Dance has a time signature of
4/4.

dance floor, where the female will gracefully circle the male dancer.
• 4. Exchange: At this point, the couple will exchange handkerchiefs,
signifying their love and commitment to one another.

TALIP
History: Talip is a dance from Carasi. It is usually performed by natives during fiestas,
weddings, a mourning of the dead, and ceremony after burial. It has been a powerful symbol
of harmony and admiration within diverse populations, likewise depicting the devout faith
and spiritual values of the people of Carasi, shared to the rest of the Ilokano community.
Time signature: Talip Dance of Isnag follows a 3/4 time signature.
Attire and Musical Instruments: The attire and musical instruments used in the Talip and
Taddo dance of the Isnag people of the Philippines are the traditional dress of dark-colored,
often plain blue, G-string called (Abag) and woven on a back-strap loom and dyed black or
dark blue (Baag) for the men, The women also wear (Badio) a short-waisted, long-sleeved
blouse, which is either plain or heavily embroidered, and the head scarf called (Laddong) for
the women. The musical instruments used is the gong (gangsa).
Highlights: With the men and women in their intricate traditional attire, the dancers shall
showcase the old, unspoiled tradition highlighting indigenous songs, games and movements.

History: Lastly, the Pama-Ndah is a fast-paced dance performed by
men. It is usually performed during celebrations, and requires the
dancer to move quickly and precisely to the beat. It is believed to have
originated from the pre-Hispanic Isneg people of Northern Luzon,
Philippines. The dance has been performed for centuries and is still
practiced today by the Isneg people.
Time signature: The time signature of the song "Pama-Ndah" is 4/4.
Attire and Musical instruments: The traditional attire for the pama-ndah
dance includes a colorful and ornate headdress, a sash, and a beaded
skirt. The accompanying musical instrument is a drum.

Basic 1. Begin with a steady, even rhythm of foot stamping and clapping.
2. Move your arms in a circular motion and begin to move your body to the rhythm of the music.
3. Step forward with both feet and then step backward with your right foot.
4. Alternate stepping forward and backward in this manner, using your arms to create a circular
motion.
5. Turn around and repeat the pattern.
6. As the music and rhythm increase, increase the speed of your steps and movements.
7. Incorporate jumps and turns as you become more comfortable with the dance.
8. Clap or stamp your feet to the beat of the music as you reach the climax of the dance.
9. End the dance with a few more steps and a final clap to the beat.

THE KALABAW
• The Kalabaw is a slower dance, and is often done in groups. the
dance represent a cycle of life and death, and the harmony between
humans and nature.
• Time signature: The Kalabaw Dance of the Isneg Tribe does not have
a specific time signature. It is usually performed in a 6/8 time
signature, but it can also be performed in a 3/4 or 4/4 time signature.
