‘’Learning Styles and Student’s Academic
Performance of Senior High School Students in
Southern Mindanao Colleges Pagadian City’’
Introduction
The research has been conducted in the Senior High School
Department at Southern Mindanao Colleges Pagadian City. This
research will help the students in future to move forward with a
better vision though effective learning strategies to improve their
learner autonomy and develop their academic performance.
Learning strategies are steps taken by students to enhance
their own learning. Strategies are especially important for
language learning because they are tools for active, self-directed
involvement, which is essential for developing communicative
competence. Appropriate language learning strategies result in
improved proficiency and greater self-confidence.
Statement of the Problem
This study aims to explore the students’ effective ways of
studying as perceived by the Senior High School Students of
Southern Mindanao Colleges of Pagadian.
Specifically, this study also seeks to answer the following
questions:
1. What is the learning strategy used in teaching the students of
Southern Mindanao Colleges?
2. What is the Academic Performances of the students in Southern
Mindanao Colleges?
3. Is there as significant relationship of the teaching strategy and
student’s academic performance of in Southern Mindanao Colleges?
Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework of this study is depicted in a schematic
diagram as illustrated in Figure 1.

Figure 1. The conceptual framework of the study.
As shown in the diagram, it presents the relationship of the
Learning styles that affects the academic performance of the
senior high students of Southern Mindanao Colleges Pagadian
City.
It is believed that the Learning styles produces effect to the
different aspects of the students, thus, learning styles are
considered as the independent variable of the study and the
academic performance of the students is the dependent
variable.
Research Environment
This study was conducted at Southern Mindanao
Colleges, Rizal Avenue. Gatas district Pagadian City,
Zamboanga del sur.
Sampling Design
Since the study has small population, the researchers
included the entire population in the study. They utilized
50 students of Southern Mindanao Colleges, Pagadian City
year 2022. They believed that having these 50 students as
their subjects of the study will somehow provide adequate
data to be interpreted for their study.
The researcher used the convenience sampling. The 50
students coming from different grade levels who are
enrolled in senior high department are the direct
respondents of this study.
Research Instrument
The survey questionnaire was used as the main data gathering
instrument. The instrument is prepared to be focused on
answering the statement problem. Learning Styles and Student’s
Academic Performance of Senior High School Students in
Southern Mindanao Colleges Pagadian City. The questionnaire
contains (25) questions. The questionnaires will be distributed to
the respondents.
The data gathering instrument was structured as a scale
raging from 1-5. Where in the (1) is strongly disagree, (2) is
disagree, (3) is neither agree or disagree, (4) is agree and the last
one is (5) strongly agree. This legend will help the researchers to
analyze the results of conducting data gathering.
Statistical Process
The statistical treatment of this research involved the
testing of the hypothesis that tried to establish significant
relationship of independent variables and dependent
variables. Simple statistics was utilized in this
investigation.
The data were analyzed and interpreted using the
following statistical tools.
Weighted Mean (WM) was used to find the relationship of Learning Styles and
Student’s Academic Performance of Senior High School Students in Southern
Mindanao Colleges Pagadian City.
Formula:
WM=∑FW
N
Where:
F = Frequency
W = Assigned Weight
N = No. of Respondents
WM = Weighted Mean
∑ = Summation Symbol
Weight Hypothetical Statistical Interpretation
Mean range Description
4 4:21 – 5.00 Strongly Agree Very High
3 3.41 – 4.20 Agree High
3 2:61-3:40 Neutral Average
2 1:81-2:60 Disagree Low
1 1-1:80 Strongly Disagree Very Low
Pearson correlation r coefficient was used in finding the
significant relationship of Learning Styles and Student’s Academic
Performance of Senior High School Students in Southern
Mindanao Colleges Pagadian City.
Formula:
Where:
N = number of paired
observations
x = first variable
y = other variable
Interpretation
0.0 - no correlation/negligible correlation
pos/neg 1.00 -perfect correlation
pos/neg 0.01-0.25 - very low correlation
pos/neg 0.26-0.50 -moderately low correlation
pos/neg 0.51-0.75 - high correlation
pos/neg 0.76-0.99 - very high correlation
Overall Interpretation
There were 50 respondents coming from the senior high
students of Southern Mindanao Colleges. A set of
questionnaires with 5 questions in each learning style with
a total of 20 questions was used to determine the learning
styles of the respondents.
In terms of the level of the learning styles of the
respondents, the findings determine that majority of the
responses in each learning style is strongly agree which is
interpreted as “Very High”. Particularly in:
Visual learning style yielded a weighted mean of 3.992 and
interpreted as high because most of the respondents agreed
with the statements (cf. Table 1).
Bodily kinesthetic learning style yielded a weighted mean of
4.8 and interpreted as very high because most of the
respondents strongly agreed with the statements (cf. Table 2).
Auditory learning style yielded a weighted mean of 4.284 and
interpreted as very high because most of the respondents
strongly agreed with the statements (cf. Table 3).
Academic performance yielded a weighted mean of 4.284 and
interpreted as very high because most of the respondents
strongly agreed with the statements (cf. Table 3). It reveals that
academic performance has a “very high” to the learning
strategies of the respondents.
In terms of the relationship of the learning styles and the
academic performance of the respondents, the findings
determine that majority of the results in each learning style is
0.001 which is interpreted as “no correlation”. Particularly in:
Visual learning style yielded a Pearson correlation r coefficient
of 0.001285625229 or 0.001 and interpreted as no correlation,
this means that the visual learning style has no correlation to
the academic performance to the students.
Bodily kinesthetic learning style yielded a Pearson correlation
r coefficient of 0. 001369718333 or 0.001 and interpreted as
no correlation, this means that the bodily kinesthetic learning
style has no correlation to the academic performance to the
students.
Auditory learning style yielded a Pearson correlation r
coefficient of 0. 000565829289 or 0.001 and interpreted
as no correlation, this means that the auditory learning
style has no correlation to the academic performance to
the students.
In terms of the level of the learning styles of the
respondents, the findings determine that majority of the
responses in each learning style is strongly agree which is
interpreted as “Very High”.
