Lesson 2 Rainforests

Here is a possible 6 mark answer using the resource: There are both physical and human changes that can impact an ecosystem. For example, Avington Park had issues with overgrown vegetation which looked unattractive but provided good wildlife habitat. This caused short term problems as it was not inviting to visitors. However, the restoration programme which involved desilting the water and redefining the space had long term benefits. It invited more birds and species to flourish in the newly open ecosystem. This shows how human intervention for aesthetic reasons can disrupt an ecosystem initially but careful management can help restore balance and biodiversity in the long run.

Lesson 2:How does change affect the

ecosystems?

Starter

• In your books answer these questions

What is a decomposer?
Ecosystems are affected by three non living
components what are they?
Lesson 2:How does change affect the
ecosystems?

Biotic-living features of the ecosystem e.g. plants

Abiotic- non living e.g. water, wind

Learning objective: To explore how changes to

the ecosystem affect its components
How does change affect ecosystems?

• Ecosystems are extremely vulnerable.

• Like dominos if one change occurs it can
greatly alter the ecosystem.

If one bird in the

rainforest has a
disease how might
this affect the
ecosystem?
What causes changes to the ecosystems?

• Changes occur due to human and natural

causes.
• They can occur on two different scales
1. Global – climate change.
2. Local – habitat change e.g. cutting down hedges
and trees.
Changes

Natural Change Human Change

• If change happens slowly the • Like a domino one human change

ecosystem can adapt…… such as chopping down trees can
• However, if it’s a rapid change like greatly change or kill the ecosystem
drought a pond or lake can dry up
killing the plants and animals
Woods are
cut down
Agricultural which
fertilisers can destroys
lead to habitats such
eutrophication as birds
which increases
algae growth
which in turn
depletes oxygen
levels this can kill
fish
Hedgerows
Ponds may be
removed to
drained to
increase size of
supply water
fields. Habitats
for farming this
are destroyed
destroys pond
life such as fish
and insects
What happens when the food chain alters?

If the perch fish enters the This means there wont be

pond ecosystem he will eat enough food for bigger
small fish and frogs species like the Heron

Now that all the frogs are eaten there

will be an outburst of more snails and
small creatures that the frog should
have eaten which means there's an
imbalance in the ecosystem
Case study: Avington Park, Hampshire
• The lake was overgrown with
vegetation and looked unattractive.
Although this was good for the
wildlife they needed to attract new
habitats.
• A restoration programme which
involved desilting the water and
redefining the space invited more
birds and species which flourished
the ecosystem.
• The lake can now be fully seen by
visitors and is an open ecosystem
inviting many species
Exam question
• Using the resource, explain how different types of change can
impact an ecosystem

Point: This is a statement e.g. There are both physical

and human changes that can effect an ecosystem….

Example: For example, Avington Park had issues…..

Explanation: This caused short term problems such as…
