Filter Diode

This document discusses different types of filter, clipper, clamper, and power supply circuits used in electronic circuits. It provides examples and explanations of capacitor filters that allow DC but block AC from reaching the load, series and parallel clippers that "clip away" portions of input signals, and clamper circuits that clamp signals to different DC levels to restore lost levels. Zener diodes are also introduced which allow current in both forward and reverse directions above the Zener voltage. DC power supplies are described as converting AC mains to a constant DC voltage through transformation, rectification, filtering, and voltage regulation.

Unit 1: Diode Applications
Filters
Circuits
Week 4
A filter circuit removes the AC part of the rectifier output and allows
the DC part to reach the load.
Capacitor Filter: The AC part of the rectifier output flows through the
capacitor but DC is blocked by the capacitor. So only the DC part
reaches the load.

Clipper
Circuits
Clippers are used ‘clip’ away, a portion of
the input signal, without distorting the
remaining part of the applied waveform.

Clamper
Circuits
The clamping network will “clamp” a signal to a different dc level.
Applications: Used to restore lost DC levels in signals from transmission (eg. Television)
The magnitude of R and C must be chosen such that the time constant RC is large enough to ensure
that the voltage across the capacitor does not discharge significantly during the interval when diode
is not conducting.

Zener Diode
A Zener diode is a type of diode that permits current not only in the forward
direction like a normal diode, but also in the reverse direction if the voltage is larger
than the breakdown voltage known as “Zener voltage” (Vz)

DC Power
Supply

The DC power supply converts the standard 220 V, 50 Hz AC into constant

DC voltage.

Transformer: steps down high voltage AC mains to low voltage AC.

Diode rectifier: converts AC to DC, but the DC output has large ripple component.
Filter: smooth the DC from varying greatly and reduces the ripple component.
Voltage regulator: eliminates ripple by setting DC output to a fixed voltage.
Load: is the part of the circuit to which the DC power is delivered to perform useful operation
