Effect of Deviant Maturing

1) Deviant maturers are those whose sexual maturation differs from the norm for their sex group by a year or more in timing or completion. This includes early, late, rapid, and slow maturers. 2) Early and rapid maturers face challenges like awkwardness and exaggerated emotional changes, while late and slow maturers struggle with fears of inadequacy and never maturing. 3) Boys and girls each have their own social issues - early maturing boys gain status but girls may seem "promiscuous," while late maturing boys face ridicule but girls are spared some psychological damage.

EFFECT OF

DEVIANT
MATURING
Deviant Maturer
• -Is one whose sexual maturation deviates by a year or
more from the norm for the individual's sex group, at
the same time at which sexual maturation occurs, or
by a year or more from the norm for the individual's
sex group in the time needed to complete the
maturation Process.
• Are children who are most affected by the physical
changes that normally occur at puberty.
Early Maturer
• -Children who mature sexually easier than their sex group.
Late Maturer
• Children who mature sexually later than their sex group.
Rapid Maturer
• Children who requires less than normal time for their sex
group to complete their maturation process.
Slow Maturer
• Children who need more that the normal time to sexually
mature.
Early Vs. Late Maturer
Early Maturer (Boys)
• Early maturing is advantageous for boys
especially in the area of sports, from which they
desire much of their prestige and status in the
peer group.
• It is from rank of the early maturers that most of
the leaders in boys' groups come and this give
them added prestige in the eyes of girls also.
Late Maturer (Boys)
• Boys who are late maturer tend to be restless,
tense, rebellious and attention seeking.
• Because of this unsocial behavior pattern, they
are less popular with both peers and adults and
are far less often selected for leadership roles
by their peers than early maturers are.
Weatherley has pointed out;
• Later maturer must cope with developmental demands
of junior high and high school period with liability of
relatively small, immature appearing physical stature.
• His appearance is likely to call out in others at least
mild reactions of derogation and expectation that he is
capable of ineffectual, immature behavior.
• Such reactions constitute a kind of social environment
which is conductive to feeling of inadequacy,
insecurity and defensive "small-boy" behavior.
Early Maturer (Girls)
• Early maturing girls is less advantageous to
girls than it is to boys.
• Early maturing girls are more grown-up and
sophisticated in their behaviour, but their
appearance and action may lead to a reputation
of being "sexually promiscuous".
• Early maturing girls are more out of step with
their peers than early maturing boys, and this
adds to their social problems.
Jones and Mussen have pointed
out:

• The early maturing girl quite naturally has interest

in boys and in social usages and activities more
mature than those of her chronological age group.
• Males of her own age group are unreceptive, for
while she is physiologically a year or two out of
steps with the girls of her class, she is three or four
years out of step with the boys.
Late Maturer (Girls)
• Girls who are late maturer are less damaged
psychologically than late maturing boys
• They are less likely engaged in status-seeking
behavior than boys, though they are concerned about
their normalcy, which they reflect in shy, retiring,
diffident behavior which is considered sex appropriate
for girls, it is not as damaging to their reputation as
similar behavior in boys would be.
