Addition of Polynomials

The document provides examples for adding polynomials by combining like terms. It introduces the CAC method for adding polynomials: C - Combine like terms A - Add the numerical coefficients C - Copy the literal coefficients Several examples are worked out step-by-step using the horizontal and vertical methods. Students are assigned three additional problems to solve using the CAC method. The document emphasizes that in adding polynomials with both positive and negative terms, the rules for multiplying signs must be followed.

DEN RULE!

• D-on’t talk to your seatmate if it is not needed.

• E-ngaged or participate in class.
• N-o food, no cellphone, and no cheating
allowed.
Activity: Let’s Find Out/Pass the Ball!
Direction: As the music plays, pass the ball to
your seatmate. The ball will stop rolling if the
music stops. The question will be answered by the
person holding the ball.
Activity: Let’s Find Out/Pass the Ball!
SIMILAR TERM!
3x-4x+7xy+9xy-10x-2y
• 3x,-4x and -10x
• 7xy and 9xy

• Note: -2y has no similar term because there’s no other term

in the given polynomial that contains variable y only.

• 2a and -7a
Activity: Let’s Find Out/Pass the Ball!
SIMILAR TERM!
4x2y + 8xy2 - 23x2y + 8x2y2
4x2y – 23x2y

Addition of polynomials
• In adding polynomials by combining like terms, you may use
this acronym as your guide.
C - Combine like terms.

A -Add the numerical coefficient.

C - Copy the literal coefficient.
Addition of polynomials
C - Combine like terms.
A -Add the numerical coefficient.
C - Copy the literal coefficient.

Example: (2x2-3x+2)+(-3x2-5x-2) Vertical:

2x2-3x+2-3x2-5x-2 2x2-3x+2
= 2x2-3x2-3x-5x+2-2 + -3x2-5x-2
= -x2-8x -x2-8x
• You can also add polynomials horizontally or vertically.
Example 2: Add (4a -7b) by (6a + 3b)
C - Combine like terms.
A -Add the numerical coefficient.
C - Copy the literal coefficient.

(4a -7b) + (6a + 3b)

4a - 7b
4a -7b + 6a + 3b
= 4a + 6a + (-7b) +3b + 6a + 3b
= 4a + 6a -7b +3b 10a-4b
= 10a-4b
Note:

In algebra, when two operations are involved together

in an expression, apply the rules in multiplying
integers:
•( + ) ( + ) = + (-)(-)=+
•( + ) ( - ) = - (-)(+)=-
• That is why, the answer becomes 10a – 4b .
Example 3: Find the sum of (4a - 7b+ 9c) and (6a -3b – 4c)

Horizontal method Vertical Method

4a - 7b+ 9c + 6a -3b – 4c 4a – 7b + 9c
4a+6a -7b-3b+9c-4c + 6a - 3b – 4c
10a -10b + 5c 10a – 10b + 5c
Example 4: Find the sum of (-3x2-10+6) and (-9x2+12x-3)
Horizontal method
(-3x2-10+6) + (-9x2+12x-3) Vertical Method
= -3x2-10+6 - 9x2+12x-3 -3x2-10+6
= -3x2- 9x2-10x+12x+6-3 + -9x2+12x-3
= -12x2+2x+3 -12x2+2x+3
Assignment

1. 2(4x2+6) + (3x2+6x+2)
2. (-5x3-15x+2) + (8x2+7x-4) =
3. 4(-2x2-9x+6) + 3(10x2+8x-5) =
