José Rizal (1861 – 1896)

José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was a


Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the
end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines.
He is considered the national hero of the Philippines.

Fernando Amorsolo (1892-1972)

Labeled the country’s first National Artist in 1972 by


then President Marcos, Fernando Amorsolo is often
known as the ‘Grand Old Man of Philippine Art’. The
Spanish-trained realist developed a backlighting
technique, where his colorful depictions of local
people reflect the radiance of the Philippine sun. The
figures and illuminated landscapes magically glow on
the canvas. Despite his deteriorating health and failing
eyesight, he remained prolific until the end, producing
up to 10 paintings a month until his death at the age
of 80. Amorsolo’s creativity defines the nation’s
culture and heritage to this day.

Vicente Manansala (1910 – 1981)

Vicente Silva Manansala was a Filipino cubist painter


and illustrator. One of the first Abstractionists on the
Philippine art scene Vicente Manansala is also
credited with bridging the gap between the city and
the suburbs, between the rural and cosmopolitan
ways of life.

Tony Velasquez (1910 – 1997)

Antonio "Tony" Velasquez is a Filipino illustrator


regarded as the Father of Tagalog comics and as the
pioneer and founding father of the Philippine comics
industry. He was the creator of Kenkoy, an “iconic
Philippine comic strip character”.

Alfonso A. Ossorio (1916 – 1990)

Alfonso Angel Yangco Ossorio was a Filipino American


abstract expressionist artist who was born in Manila
in 1916 to wealthy Filipino parents from the province
of Negros Occidental. His heritage was Hispanic,
Filipino, and Chinese. Between the ages of eight and
thirteen, he attended school in England.

Filipino comics artist, born in Talisay, Negros

Mauro Malang Santos (1928 – 2017)

Mauro Malang Santos, commonly known by the


mononym Malang, was a Filipino and award-winning
cartoonist, illustrator, and fine arts painter. As a
comics artist he is best known for the series Kosme
the Cop, Chain Gang Charlie and Beelzebub.

Francisco Reyes (1930’s)

Francisco Reyes is a Filipino illustrator and comic strip


artist who is regarded as the “King of the Philippine-
jungle lord school of comics-strip writing”. He was the
co-creator, together with Pedrito Reyes, of Kulafu, the
first colored adventure comic strip in the history of
comics and magazines in the Philippines.

Celso L. "Sonny" Trinidad was a Filipino comics artist

Ang Kiukok (1935 – 2005)

Born to Chinese immigrants, Ang Kiukok is the


pioneer of Philippine modern figurative
expressionism and was a renowned Filipino
Expressionist whose colorful and striking paintings
portrayed a variety of cubist-like figures such as a
mother embracing her infant, grisly crucifixions,
tables holding an array of fish and fruit, stray dogs,
and screaming subjects. Rewarded as the country's
National Artist in 2001.

Ang Kiukok’s “Fishermen” became the most expensive Philippine


artwork ever sold in the country. Kiukok’s 1981 easel painting sold

best known for his works on Aztec and Aliwan

Rodolfo D. Nebres is a Filipino comics artist who has


worked mostly as an inker in the American comic
book industry. Known for his lush, detailed inklines,

Filipino animator and voice actor. He co-directed and


was one of the story writers for the 2015 Pixar film
