Mars

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and has seasons like Earth due to a similar axial tilt. It is much colder than Earth, with temperatures varying greatly between extreme summer highs of 20°C and winter lows of -143°C. Mars has a thin atmosphere composed mostly of carbon dioxide, along with nitrogen and argon. It also has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, and water ice is found on its surface. The Curiosity rover continues exploring Mars to search for signs of ancient life and determine if it could support human colonization.

What is Mars?
Mars is a rocky planet. It’s the fourth planet in order of distance from
the Sun and the second smallest in the solar system, after Mercury.
Mars’ axial inclination
Mars’ axial inclination is of 25º, similar to the Earth. That’s why it has
seasons, like our planet.

An axial inclination is the angle of inclination of the planet's axis,

which is animamos imaginary axis going through the middle of the
planet.
Mars’ temperature and seasons
The climate of Mars is colder than on Earth because Mars is farther away from the Sun than
the Earth so it receives less heat. Also, it has a large temperature variability.

Mars has the same seasons as the Earth (because their axial inclination is similar), but quite
more extreme and long (because its orbital period is longer) .

In summer, the temperatures can

get over 20 ºC but at night it goes We would need to create a space
down to -80 ºC. full of heat with radiators that
work with the energy obtained by
solar radiation in order to
survive.
In winter, temperatures in polar
ice caps can go down to -143 ºC
Gravity on Mars
Gravity on Mars is the 62% of the gravity in Earth. That means that it
would be difficult for us to step on Mars’ ground because we would be
floating. A person that weighs 100 kg in the Earth, would weigh 38 kg in
Mars.

We would need to wear

some special boots with
a lot of weight to stay
The Mars
on the floor.
Earth
Mars’ atmosphere
Mars’ atmosphere is mainly composed of carbon dioxide. It has 95 %
of carbon dioxide, 3% of nitrogen and 2% of argon. None of them can
be breathed by humans.

We would have to
create an artificial
magnetosphere,
turning carbon
dioxide into
oxygen by a way
that NASA is
working on in
order to breathe.
Curiosity
Mars Science Laboratory created Curiosity. Curiosity is a mission that includes a
rover directed by NASA. It is controlled from the Earth and the speed of the rover is
130 meters per hour.

Objectives: find life in Mars, determine the present state, cycles and distribution of
water and carbon dioxide and investigate the chemical and mineral composition of
the surface.

It has already found out many things, it could have existed life before us in Mars.
Water on Mars

Mars’ atmosphere contains water in the form of vapor, it has ice and also very cold
liquid water.

We can’t drink it because it's full of perchlorate, a kind of salt that it’s toxic for us. We
would need to dig into Mars’ surface until we see the water, desalinate it and make it
pure with a water purificator.

Radiation

Radiation is the transmission of subatomic particles that transport energy in the form of
waves. On Earth there is a magnetosphere.

Radiation affects the health of people. So if you get a lot of radiation, you could get sick.

In space, there’s not magnetosphere.

In Mars we could create an artificial magnetosphere for protecting us from radiation.

Time on Mars.
Mars’ orbital period (year) lasts 687 days. A day in Mars lasts 24 hours
and 40 minutes.
Mars’ satellites
Mars has two satellites, those ones:

Deimos has a diameter of 12.4 km and it takes it 30 hours to orbit Mars.

It is 23460 km away from Mars’ surface.

Deimos

Phobos

Phobos has a diameter of 22 km

It is 9380 km away from Mars’ surface, and

it takes it 7 hours and 30 minutes to turn around Mars.

Sizes

Mars’ diameter is of 6794 km

Mars is 227.9 million km away from the Sun, that’s why if you’re on
Mars, you see a little Sun.
How long would it take us to go to Mars?

When both planets are close, they are at 54.6 millions of km far from
each other. When they’re far, they are at 401 millions of km far from each
other.

At light speed, when they’re closer, we would last three minutes to arrive,
and if they’re far, 22 minutes.

The spacecraft that has last less to arrive to Mars, has last 168 days, so
we can also last that time.
How would we survive on Mars?

Persons would need to wear special boots to be able to step on the

ground.

In a part of Mars, we would need to cover an area with a layer, like an

artificial magnetosphere, full of heat with lots of radiators that work
with the energy that we receive from solar radiation. And in that layer,
we would take off the carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen by a way
which NASA is working on.

We would have to desalinate the water and purificate it with a water

purificator.
