Transactional Analysis

Transactional analysis (TA) was developed by Eric Berne in the 1950s as a way to explain how people interact with each other, including in a therapeutic context. TA classifies interpersonal communication into three ego states: Parent, Adult, and Child. The Parent ego state refers to behaviors and thoughts learned from parents or others. The Adult ego state operates rationally in the present. The Child ego state involves how one felt and behaved as a child that can be replayed unconsciously.
