Marine and Costal Process

The document discusses various coastal hazards such as coastal erosion caused by wind and water movement wearing down coastlines, submersion from rising sea levels melting glacial ice and increasing ocean volume, saltwater intrusion as fresh water is withdrawn faster than replenished changing pressure, and storm surges generating huge waves during typhoons making landfall combined with high tide. Coastal areas are classified based on location and formation and are constantly changing from natural processes and human activities, requiring strategies like hard structures, beach replenishment, or managed retreat to stabilize eroding shorelines.

Marine and

Coastal Process
2
Coast and shore defined

Coast: Area of contact between land and sea—Extend

inland until meets a different geographical setting
Shoreline: Precise boundary where water meets
adjacent dry land

Shoreline Coast
The Earth’s coasts

 There are two main ways to classify coasts:

1) based on location and 2) based on coastal
formation
 Coasts are constantly changing as a result of
natural processes
 Human activities also modify the coasts

4
What are the hazards usually occur
along marine and coastal areas?

6
What are the hazards usually occur
along marine and coastal areas?

A. Coastal Erosion
B. Submersion
C. Saltwater Intrusion
D. Storm Surge

7
A. Costal Erosion

 Wearing down of
coastlines by the
movement of wind and
water.
 When cyclones occur
along coastal areas, the
winds and waves carry the
sediment away from the
shoreline.
8
Erosional Features
A. Costal Erosion

3 classification of stabilizing shoreline.

Hard stabilization
Soft stabilization
Retreat

10
A. Costal Erosion

3 classification of stabilizing shoreline.

Hard stabilization
– Building structures that will slow down the erosion
on areas that are prone to erosion.
– Jetties, sea walls, and breakwaters

11
A. Costal Erosion

3 classification of stabilizing shoreline.

Soft stabilization
– Beach nourishment, wherein sand from an offshore
location is brought to an area with receding
shoreline.

12
Costal Erosion

3 classification of stabilizing shoreline.

Retreat
– Done in places where there is a severe coastal
erosion.
– Limit the amount of human interference.

13
B. Submersion

 Happens because of the changes in the sea level,

specifically, when it rises dangerously above the normal
level.
 Due to the increase in the global temperature which, in turn,
melts the glacial deposits and increases the over all sea
level.

14
Ocean Topography
16
C. Saltwater Intrusion

 The movement of saltwater into the freshwater.

 If fresh water is being withdrawn faster that is
being replenished, then there will be a change in
pressure.

17
Aquifers

 Aquifer: a body of saturated rock or

sediment through which water can move
easily
D. Storm Surges

 Occurs in coastal areas when typhoons make

landfall.
 Huge wave generated by storms + occurrence
of high tide.

19
Tidal forces

Tides enhanced during full Moon and new Moon

Second Project

 1st week of October

 Evaluate the Risk in different Brgy. Of
Rosario namely:
– Bacani- Dys Group
– Tanglag- Dina Group
– Carunoan West- Clarence Group
– C. East- Fernando Group and Erica E. Group
– Marcos- Jemalyn Group and Alex Group

23
 1st – to create HAZARD MAP of the Brgy. (Diorama)
(1/2 illustration board)
 2nd – Get the Info of the Brgy. Example; (1Cartolina)
– History of the Brgy.
– Population
– Number of families/ House Hold
 3rd – Identify the vulnerability of the barangay (1 Cartolina)
HAZARD VULNERABILITY
LANDSLIDE 10 families
-4 Men (adult)
-3 Women (adult)
-1 Men (Elderly)
24 -2 Men (Young)
