Competencies of a Teacher” all about?
The Professional Competencies of a Teacher is all about
identifying series of competencies that a teacher should
possess or develop to respond to the new educational
needs in a society in constant changes.

Who are involved so we can determine
what competencies a teacher must
have?
1. Teachers/Teacher Competencies

For pre-service teachers, competencies are the requirements of a


“competency-based” teacher education and include the knowledge, skills
and values a teacher-trainee must demonstrate for successful completion of
a teacher education program (Houstan, 1987 cited in 1).

For professional teachers, competencies are the skills and knowledge that
enable a teacher to be successful. To maximize student learning, teachers
must have expertise in a wide-ranging array of competencies in an
especially complex environment where hundreds of critical decisions are
required each day (Jackson, 1990).
2. Students/Student Skill

Different complexities of our society today severely


challenge individuals. The competencies needed for these
demands can enable us to identify our goals for educational
system and lifelong learning, and evaluate the competencies
for the 21st century-teacher.
Students/Student Skill
At first, we need to understand the skills and sub-skills of students require for
successful communication and personal development, those that should assure them
a competitive advantage in life:

Collaboration
Thinking and Organization and
Problem- Planning
Solving Self Direction
and Learning Information
and Research
When do teachers achieve the highest
point of professional competency?
During their professional careers, teachers pass through the
following levels of professional growth to achieve the best of
professional competency.
1st Level: pedagogical ability – characterized by detailed knowledge of the
subject;
2nd Level: pedagogical skill – perfected teaching skill;
3rd Level: pedagogical creativity – marked by implementation of new methods
and techniques into educational activities;
4th Level: pedagogical innovation – distinguished by the incorporation of
essentially new, progressive theoretical ideas, principles and methods of
training and education (Buharkova, Gorshkova, 2007).
As teachers, how should we practice our teaching
competencies in the 21st century?
1. Teachers demonstrate
leadership

a. Teachers lead in the classroom


b. Teachers demonstrate leadership in the school
c. Teachers lead the teaching profession
d. Teachers advocate for schools and students
e. Teachers demonstrate high ethical standards
2. Teachers establish a respectful
environment for a diverse
population of students

a. Teachers provide an environment in which each child has a positive, nurturing


relationship with caring adults
b. Teachers embrace diversity in the school community and in the world
c. Teachers treat students as individuals
d. Teachers adapt their teaching for the benefit of students with special needs
e. Teachers work collaboratively with families of students and other
significant adults
3. Teachers know the content
they teach

a. Teachers develop and apply lessons based on an effective course of study


b. Teachers honor the content appropriate to their teaching specialty
c. Teachers show they recognize the interconnectedness of content
areas/discipline
d. Teachers make their instructions relevant to students
4. Teachers facilitate learning
for their students

a. Teachers show they know the ways in which learning takes place and the
appropriate levels of intellectual, physical, social, and emotional
development of their students
b. Teachers plan instruction appropriate to their students
c. Teachers show their good judgment, quick decision and versatility
d. Teachers display their awareness of technology’s potential to enhance
learning
e. Teachers help students grow as thinking individuals
f. Teachers help students to work in teams and develop leadership qualities
g. Teachers reach their students best
h. Teachers best assess what students have learned
5. Teachers reflect on
their practice

a. Teachers analyze student learning

Why is the topic important for pre-service
teachers like us?
Ideally, if we become educators in the future,
we should demonstrate the different
