Crop Protection Essentials

This document discusses principles of crop protection. It defines crop protection as managing plant diseases, weeds and other pests that damage crops. Diseases are caused by continuous irritation while weeds are plants in the wrong place. Pests can damage crops or be beneficial in other settings. The history of crop protection in the Philippines involved introducing new crops during Spanish rule and using fertilizers under American occupation. Current functions include pest management using IPM, GAP, and biocontrol, as well as pesticide management, plant quarantine, and phytosanitation.

PRINCIPLES

OF CROP
PROTECTION
CROP PROTECTION
• is the science and practice of
managing plant diseases, weeds
and other pests that damage
agricultural crop sand forestry.
The crops in field are exposed to
many factor.
 is the collection of tools,
products, and practices
farmers use to defend their
crops against weeds, insects,
and disease. Insects and
disease can also have a
devastating impact on food
production.
DISEASE
Disease is a
malfunctioning process
that is caused by
continuous irritation.
WEED
A weed is a plant
considered undesirable
in a particular
situation, "a plant in
the wrong place’’.
PEST
 A pest is any living organism, whether
animal, plant or fungus. It is a loose
concept, as an organism can be a pest in
one setting but beneficial,domesticated
or acceptable in another. Pest insects
can: damage or kill agricultural crops,
ornamental plants, or native plants;
consume and or damage harvested food.
HISTORY OF CROP PROTECTION

SPANISH PERIOD (1521-1899)

Introduction of new species and
varieties of crops via the Galleon trade
AMERICAN OCCUPATION (1900-
1945)
Use of fertilizers especially in sugarcane
plantations
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION
FUNCTIONS

PEST MANAGEMENT
PESTICIDE MANAGEMENT
PLANT QUARANTINE
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION
FUNCTIONS

PEST MANAGEMENT
A.IPM-FFS
The Farmer Field School (FFS) is a
group- based learning process that has
been used by a number of governments,
NGOs and international agencies to
promote integrated pest management
(IPM).
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

PEST MANAGEMENT
B. GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICE (GAP)
are specific methods which, when applied
to agriculture, create food for consumers or
further processing that is safe and wholesome.
GAP are practices that address environmental,
economic & social sustainability for on-farm
processes, and result in safe and quality food
and non-food agricultural products.
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

PEST MANAGEMENT
C. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL or BIOCONTROL
is a method of controlling pests such as
insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases
using other organisms. It relies on
predation, parasitism, herbivory , or other
natural mechanisms, but typically also
involves an active human management role.
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION
FUNCTIONS

PESTICIDE MANAGEMENT
A.REGISTRATION
B.ENFORCEMENT
C.FOOD MONITORING
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

PLANT QUARANTINE
A.INSPECTION
Inspections concerning whether
plants are contaminated by disease
or pests is actually implemented to
plants to be imported with a
phytosanitary certificate attached.
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

PLANT QUARANTINE
B.IMPORT PEST RISK ANALYSIS
The process of evaluating biological or
other scientific and economic evidence to
determine whether an organism is a pest,
whether it should be regulated, and the
strength of any phytosanitary measures
to betaken against it.
CURRENT CROP PROTECTION FUNCTIONS

PLANT QUARANTINE
C. PHYTOSANITATION
Phytosanitary certification is used
to attest that consignments meet
phytosanitary (regarding plants)
import requirements.
