SUBSYSTEM OF THE EARTH
Everything
in Earth's system can be placed into one of four
major subsystems: land, water, living things, or air. These four
subsystems are called "spheres." Specifically, they are the “1.
lithosphere/geosphere" (land), “2. hydrosphere" (water),
“3. biosphere" (living things), and “4. atmosphere" (air).
Atmosphere – It is the gaseous layer above the earth surface
(78% N; 21% O2; other gases Argon, CO2, CO, Other inert gases
1%) The atmosphere supports life because animals and O2,
and plants need both CO2 and O2. In addition , atmosphere
supports life indirectly by regulating climate. Air acts both a
blanket and filter; retaining heat at the right and shielding
from direct solar radiation during the day.
Biosphere – the zone of the Earth where all forms of life
exist: in the sea, on land and in water. It it sometimes
called as the large ecosystem. This is the zone that life
inhabits. Biosphere is a very thin layer of the Earth
surface.
Geosphere – the solid Earth, consisting of the entire
planet from the center of the core to the outer crust.
Includes the core, mantle, and crust of the Earth.
Hydrosphere – the water parts of the Earth which
circulates among oceans, continents, glaciers, and
atmosphere. Oceans cover 71% of Earth and contain 97.5%
of its water.
The four spheres of Earth are closely connected to each
other. Birds(biosphere) fly through the air (atmosphere),
and water (hydrosphere) flows through the soil
(lithosphere or geosphere). The spheres of the earth are
closely connected to each other. A change in one sphere
results in a change in two or more spheres
