SNMP

This document provides an overview of network management and the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). It discusses how a Network Management Server (NMS) can be used to monitor devices on a network. The key components of SNMP are described, including SNMP managers, agents, and the Management Information Base (MIB). The document outlines the different SNMP message types - GET, SET, TRAP, and Inform - and provides an example of configuring SNMP on a device using PRTG.

2
T Lecture Outline
› Network Audit Tools
› Designing the Network Topology and Solutions

3
T Network Management Server
› Imagine you have a large network that has many switches and router,
a dozen servers and hundreds of workstations.
› Wouldn’t be great, if you could monitor all those devices somehow?
› Using a NMS (Network Management Server) it is possible to monitor
all devices in your network.

4
T SNMP – Simple Network Management Protocol
› Application Layer Protocol
› RFC – 1065 in 1998
› UDP Port # 161, 162
› SNMPv1, SNMPv2, SNMPv3
› SNMP Is used for Monitoring, T-shooting and watching over internal
status of a network device graphically.
› SNMP Components:
– SNMP Manager
– SNMP Agent
– MIB
5
T SNMP - MIB
› Management Information Base
› Database where variable are stored on the agent.
› Or in simple language MIB is a collection of Object-IDs
› All information about agent stored on it’s database called MIB.
› MIB Information example:
– All interfaces status and IP addresses
– CPU Load percentage
– Memory load percentage
– Memory capacity

6
T NOTE!
› NMS can only have two types of permissions.
› RO (Read-only)
– NMS can only read the MIB which is received from the agent.
› RW (Read-Write)
– NMS can read and write the MIB which is received from the agent.

7
T SNMP Message Types
› SNMP GET
– When server ask for information this is called SNMP GET.
– Can be done manually or predefined internals from NMS.
– NMS agent will send large amount of data to SNMP server.

8
T SNMP Message Types
› SNMP SET
– This message uses to push down configuration from NMS to SNMP agent.
– Means configuration which sent from NMS to agent.
– For example: modifying the agent MIB which, in turn modifies device
configuration.

9
T SNMP Message Types
› SNMP TRAP
– Generated by SNMP agent when an error condition occur.
– Transmitted to NMS (SNMP Manager).
– For ex. Memory capacity full or down interface
– Agent dose not received acknowledgment
– Which SNMP received message or no?

10
T SNMP Message Types
› SNMP Inform
– Similar to an SNMP Trap
– Agent received receives from NMS
– Only supported version 3

11
T SNMP Configuration with PRTG steps:
› Access-list 1 permit host <agent ip>
› Snmp-server community <password> <ro or rw> <access-list#>
› Snmp-server view <password> iso include
› Snmp-server host <NMS IP> version 2 <password>
