Atherosclerosis
By Shobana 1
What is Atherosclerosis?
A build up of cholesterol plaque in the
walls of arteries, causing obstruction
of blood flow. Plaques may rupture,
causing acute occlusion of the artery
by clot.
Risk factors
Modifiable risk factor
It is mainly classified into two
types:
Non-modifiable risk factor
Hyperlipidaemia
Modifiable risk factors
Hypertension
Cigarette smoking
Diabetes mellitus
Genetic abnormalities
Increasing age
Non-Modifiable risk factors
Family history
Male gender

Causes High blood
pressure High cholesterol
Atherosclerosis starts with damage or
injury to the inner layer of an artery.
The damage may be caused by:
Irritant (nicotine) Diseases (diabetes)

Diagnosis
1. Physical examination
2. Blood tests
3. Imaging tests
4. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
5. Cardiac catheterization. 8
1.Physical Examination
A doctor may conduct a physical exam and
listen to your heart for abnormal sounds such as
a heart murmur or bruit which may indicate the
presence of atherosclerosis.
9
2.Blood test
A blood test can measure the levels of
cholesterol triglycerides and other fats in your
blood. High levels of these substances can
indicate atherosclerosis as they contribute to
plaque buildup in your arteries.
10
3.Imaging tests
Imaging tests such as ultrasound CT scan MRI
or angiography can help detect the presence of
plaque in your arteries and the degree of
blockage.
11
4.Electrocardiogram tests
This test measures the electrical activity of your
heart to detect any abnormal rhythms or damage
caused by atherosclerosis.
12
5. Cardiac catheterization
A small catheter is inserted into your arteries to
take X-ray images of your heart and arteries to
determine the severity of atherosclerosis.

Treatment Lifestyle changes
The treatment for
atherosclerosis includes
lifestyle changes and medical Medical intervention
interventions
1. Dietary changes
2. Exercise
Lifestyle changes
3. Quit Smoking
4. Manage other health conditions
1. Medications
2. Angioplasty and stenting
Medical intervention
3. Coronary artery bypass surgery
