Bharat Stage - Vi Engine

The document discusses India's transition from BS IV to BS VI emission standards for vehicles by 2020. Some key points: 1) BS VI standards require significantly lower sulfur levels in fuels to reduce air pollutants from vehicle engines. 2) India needs stricter standards to meet its Paris Climate Agreement obligations and address air pollution issues in its highly populated cities. 3) Automakers and oil refineries must invest heavily to upgrade vehicles and fuels to comply with the new BS VI technology requirements and fuel specifications by 2020.

BHARAT STAGE –VI ENGINE

PRESENTED BY- KIRTISWARUP MOHANTY

INTRODUCTION
• Bharat stage emission standards (BSES) are the emission standards instituted
by government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from the Engines.
• These standard are set by the central pollution control board under the Ministry
of Environment Forest and Climate Change•
• The central government has mandated that all vehicle manufacturers, both two
wheeler and four wheeler should manufacture , sell and register only BS6
vehicle from 1ST April 2020
WHY INDIA FELT THE NEED TO LEAPFROG FROM
BS IV TO BS VII
• India is a country with 10 most populated cities of the world
• In October 2016, India signed the Conference of Protocol also known as the Paris
Climate Agreement.
• Being a signatory to the agreement, India is obligated to bring down the carbon
footprint by 33-55% from the levels recorded in 2005 in the next 12 years.
• Ideally, BS V would have been rolled out by 2021 and BS VI in 2024 but leapfrog
to Bharat Stage VI norms by 2020 had to be planned because of the carbon
footprint obligations.
WHAT IS BS-VI GRADE FUEL
• The move from BS-IV to BS-VI will primarily require fuel to have
significantly lower sulpher content.
• Presently, the sulpher content in BS-IV petrol and diesel is 50 parts per
million (ppm).
• BS VI-grade fuels, however, are to have a Sulphur content of 10 ppm.
INVESTMENT REQUIRED
• Automotive industry would need an investment of Rs. 1.5 lakh crore in
order to meet this change.
• The move will increase the price of cars in India substantially.
• Oil refineries will need to invest a staggering Rs 80,000 crore in
upgrading petrol and diesel quality to meet cleaner Euro-IV/V fuel
specifications by 2020
WORKING PRINCIPLE

• The first four strokes are the same as a four stroke internal
combustion engine.
• After the exhaust stroke, instead of air fuel mixture (as in case of
petrol engines), fresh air/water is sucked into the cylinder from the
filter and is removed during the sixth stroke
ADVANTAGES OF BS VI OVER BS IV
• NOx emission will come down by approximately 25% for the petrol engine and
68% for the diesel engine’s.engine ’s.
• The PM emission will see a substantial decrease of 80% in diesel
• OBD will become mandatory for every vehicle and it will help monitor the
pollution caused by the vehicle in real time.
• RDE (Real Driving Emission) will be introduced for the first time that will
measure the emission in real-world conditions and not just under test conditions.
DIS -ADVANTAGE:-

• BS6 fuel has five times less sulphur content in comparison to BS4 fuel
• This could cause issues to the fuel injector over the long run due to lack of
lubrication, leading to a faster rate of wear.
CONCLUSION

• We will get more fuel efficient and very low emission producing vehicle.
• To achieve emission limits specified in BS6 ample amount of engine
electronic will required. This will enhance business domestic and MNC
automotive electronic supplier.
• Through all these efforts people can ensure significant reduction in the air
pollution from the automobile.
