Fundamentals of
Research
Writing an Effective Title
A good title does several things:
It predicts content
It catches the reader’s interest.
It reflects the tone or slant of the piece of writing
It contains keywords that will make it easy to access
by a computer search.
Keeping these functions in mind will help a writer choose a specific and
meaningful title, not a mere label.
2
Your Title is a mini-Abstract
Paint a quick picture of the key ideas
The title should be clear, unambiguous, and not
cute.
The words should reflect the focus of your
proposal.
Put the most important words first.

CHAPTER I – INTRODUCTION
a. Opening Paragraphs (as background of the study)
b. Objectives of the Study
c. Significance of the Study
d. Time and Place of the Study
e. Scope and Limitations of the Study
f. Conceptual Framework
Interrelationship of variables
g. Definition of Terms (Operational Definition – how they will be used
in the study)
4
INTRODUCTION
This introduces the concept of the study in a
very effective manner starting from the
MACRO/GENERAL TO MICRO/SPECIFIC.
It should:
1.Have a statement of
importance.
2.Be with impact.
3.Simple and clearly related to
the topic.
5
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
▰This selection presents the rationale or reason
for the conduct of the study. This is the presentation
of the problem situation arising from the gap
between the ideal and what is in reality on the basis
of what is experienced, heard, read from national,
regional and local setting.
▰ The background intends to draw a clearer
picture of what you want to say. It describes clearly,
colorfully and vividly the problem situation which
serves as the rationale for the study.
It represents in details the problem situation based on what you:
See and Observe Hear Read
Happenings Lectures/Speeches Newspapers
Events Radio and TV Broadcasting Journal
Phenomenon Conversations Books
Personal Experience Interviews Reports and Monographs
Records of Critical Incidents Records of Opinions, Positions Records of Findings,
and Values Figures/Statistical Data
7
INTRODUCTION (Paragraph Rule)
First Paragraph- Background Statement
- State the concept/problem
- State the impact or significance
- State uncertainty/controversy literature
- Review of Literature to support uncertainty
Second Paragraph
- Cite current works on the identified gaps. What is
lacking/controversial/contradicting
Third Paragraph
- Cite intent to resolve the problem in the proposed
study (Activity/Statement)

DEVELOPMENT OF A MOTION SENSITIVE AUTO SHUT-OFF
DEVICE FOR FLAT IRON
The Philippine economy is in dire need of
conservation and preservation of energy. Pending and
incoming energy crises because of the depleting
resources, even made more critical by wars in oil
producing countries, make it imperative that technology 1ST

be utilized to somehow minimize the problem. The
researchers looked into energy consumption in homes
and believed that if only energy used in homes be
reduced minimally, it can greatly contribute to the
conservation of energy.
9
Investigating on the appliances used at home, according to absak.com. the
flat iron is one of the must need appliances that has a high wattage
consumption of 1.1 kWatts (wholesalesolar.com) which is nearly equal to
the refrigerator with a wattage consumption of 1.4 kWatts/day. Worst at
times, the iron is left idle when some other tasks had to be attended by the
user. During this time, the power of the iron is on and energy is continued
to be consumed. Worst, during this moment that the iron is left, it could
overheat and may cause fire
10
The researchers are aware that the flat irons have thermostats
built inside them that keep its temperature constant (it is ON when it is
getting cooler than the set temperature, and when it is getting too hot, 2ND
Paragraph
it switched OFF the heating mechanism). But this is not an indication
that energy is not being consumed, rather it has a continuous
consumption of energy since the appliance is not completely shut off.
11
The study therefore aims to develop a Motion Sensitive
Auto-Shut-Off Device that would apply technology whereby a
timer circuit would ensure the automatic and complete shut off 3rd
Paragraph
of the flat iron when left unattended with the use of a motion
sensor and a relay at an adjustable amount of time. Hence, it
reduces energy consumption and preventing probable accidental
fires.
