Henry’s wives
He married 6 times.

His second wife was Anne Boleyn.


His first wife was Catherine of Aragon. His third wife was Jane Seymour which
he married in 1536.
She had a baby girl named Elizabeth, so
She had a baby girl named Mary. he got rid of her too.
But she did not get him any boys so he She finally had a baby boy named
divorced her. Edward, but she died two weeks after
Edward was born.
Henry’s wives

His sixth wife was Catherine Parr.


His fourth wife was Anne of Cleves. His fifth wife was Catherine Howard.

During that time there were no pictures,


so he thought she seemed nice until he
saw her and said she was ugly. So he
divorced her right away. Note: He kept trying to get a
second boy to be a backup heir
for his first son, like he was with
his brother.
What happened next?
Problems at the church!
When Henry divorced his first wife
Catherine of Aragon, it upset the Pope
(who is the head of church)
As a result:
Henry made himself the Head of
Church in England, which gave him the
power to:
• Make decisions about the church
• Not pay money to the pope

This is the beginning of the Church of


England, making him rich.
King Henry closed all Monasteries
(churches/temples) where monks lived,
worked, prayed and helped take care of
poor people. Taking the land and money for
himself.

This angered people, but he killed anyone


that tried to stop him or disagree with him.
Henry VIII’s death and successor

King Henry died in 1547, with a son to


succeed him.
