It is also used for stative verbs. These are verbs used to describe ways of thinking, possession and senses (taste, hear, feel, etc.).

The present continuous (I am walking)

We use the present continuous to talk about actions or situations at the time of speaking and actions happening around now.

• She’s talking to one of the designers at the moment. (time of speaking)


• We are looking for a supplier in the Far East. (happening around now)
• The marketing department is preparing a new brochure.
• The new machine is selling very well.

We also use the present continuous for temporary or provisional situations.

• We’re importing a lot from Chile because of the situation in Europe


• They are using the fax machine because their server is not working.

It is also used to talk about the future to refer to definite future arrangements.

• I’m flying to Peru tonight.

The present perfect (I have walked)

The present perfect is used for actions in the past which still have a connection to the present. It is also used for actions that
have recently finished. It may be used to report news.

• I have worked for this company for five years. (started five years ago and continues until now)
• I haven’t seen him since May.
• The air conditioning has stopped working. (stopped very recently)
• Some money has gone missing! (news)
