Literary theories allow you the chance
to bring your own understanding to
the texts you read, giving you a way
to talk about what you read and how
you interpret what you read.
Types of Literary Theory

There are many literary theories and different lenses through which literature can be
examined, but there are a few general statements that can summarize the elements of literary
theory.
• Philosophy is a component in literary criticism as we analyze life and how it is lived in
comparison to a text. Life has reverberating effects, and just like philosophers have studied
those reactions, literature evaluates those attitudes.
• According to Abrams (2009:61) literary
criticism, is the overall term for studies
concerned with defining, classifying
analyzing, interpreting and evaluating
works of literature.
On the other hand, literary theory is the
theory that guide those that criticize
people's work(s).
COMPONENTS OF LITERARY ANALYSIS

The elements to be analyzed are

• Plot
• Setting
• Characters
• Point of view
• Figurative language
• Style.
This will serve as the evidence/support throughout your paper.
PLOT

• The story's series of events.

Think of plot as the story's
skeleton: it defines the
What, When, and Where of
the story, which allows for
everything else (like
characters and themes) to
develop. What happens (and
what is the cause-and-
effect), when does it happen,
and where is it happening?
SETTING

• Refers to the time, place, and

environment in which a story
occurs. Through its use, authors
can establish mood, develop their
characters, and enhance the
conflict.
CHARACTERS

• A character is a person, animal, being, creature, or thing in a story.

• Writers use characters to perform the actions and speak dialogue, moving the story along
a plot line.
• A story can have only one character (protagonist) and still be a complete story. This
character’s conflict may be an inner one (within him/herself), or a conflict with something
natural, such as climbing a mountain.
• Most stories have multiple characters interacting, with one of them as the antagonist,
causing a conflict for the protagonist.
POINT
OF
VIEW
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

It’s tempting to think that direct language is the

easiest for us to understand, but sometimes we
respond better to more creative wording. Writers and
poets use figurative language to build imagery and
give words more power.
Simile, metaphor and a host of other non-literal
methods of expression help make foreign concepts
familiar and graspable.
STYLE

STYLE is defined as the way something is

done. In literature, it applies to how
something is written. It distinguishes one
author from another based on the tone and
voice of their writing.
