Visual Media

This document discusses visual media and information. It defines visual information as using visual media like photos, videos, and graphics to represent information pictorially. It then lists different types of visual media like paintings, photos, sculptures, and charts. The document outlines the design elements of visuals like line, shape, color, and form. It also discusses design principles for effective visuals like consistency, center of interest, balance, and contrast. It notes the advantages of visual media in catching attention and allowing creative expression, but also the limitations of possible distraction and different interpretations.

Objectives:
a. describe the different dimensions of visual
information and media;
b. critique sample text-based presentation
using design principle and elements;
c. produce and evaluate a creative text-based
presentation using design principles and
elements.
Visual information entails the use of visual
media (that may or may not be accompanied
with audio/sound) in the form of photographs,
motion pictures, video recordings, graphic
arts, visual aids, and other displays that use
pictorial representations (Dictionary of
Military and Associated Terms, 2005).

Purpose of visual information

•The purpose of visual information is to gain

attention, create meaning, and facilitate
retention.
Visual design elements- the building
blocks or basic units in the
construction of visual images.
The Design Elements are:

a. Line- describes a shape or outline. It can create texture and

can be thick or thin. Lines may be actual, implied, vertical,
horizontal, diagonal or contour.

b. Shape- usually a geometric area that stands out from the space
next to or around it, or because of differences in value, color, or
texture. Shape may also be organic.
The Design Elements are:
c. Value- the degree of light and dark in a design. It is the
contrast between black and white and all tones in between.
Contrast is the extreme changes between values.

d. Texture- the way a surface feels or is perceived to feel. Texture

can be added to attract or repel interest in the visual element.
Visual texture can be added surfaces peaks and valleys, resulting
in a feeling of smoothness or roughness in objects.
The Design Elements are:

e. Color- determined by its hue (name of color), intensity (purity of the

hue), Color and color combination can play a large role in design. Color
may be used for emphasis or to elicit emotions from the viewers. Color may
be warm, cool, or neutral. It plays a major role in our visual perception- as
it influences our reactions of the world around us.

f. Form- a figure having volume and thickness. An illusion of a 3-

dimensional object can be implied through the use of light and shading.
Form can be viewed from many angles.
Visual Design Principles are:

a. Consistency of margins, typeface, typestyle, and colors is

necessary, especially in slide presentations or documents
that are more than one page.

b. Center of interest - an area that first attracts attention in a

composition. This area is more important when compared to
the other objects or elements in a composition.
Visual Design Principles are:

c. Balance- a feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color, etc.,.

Balance can be symmetrical and evenly balanced, or asymmetrical and
unevenly balanced. Objects, values, colors, textures, shapes, forms, etc.
can be used in creating balance in composition.

d. Harmony- brings together a composition. For example, if your

composition is using wavy lines and organic shapes, you should
consistently use these types of lines and not put in just one geometric
shape.
Visual Design Principles are:

e. Contrast- offers come change in value creating a visual discord in a

composition. The contrast shows the difference between shapes and can be
used as a background to bring objects out and forward in a design.

f. Directional Movement- a visual flow through the composition. It can

be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object
by way of placement and position.
Visual Design Principles are:

g. Rhythm- a movement in which some elements recur regularly.

Like a dance, it will have the flow of objects that will seem like the
beat of music.

h. Perspective- this is created through the arrangement of objects

in real life. Perspective is a learned meaning of the relationship
between different objects seen in space.
Advantage of Visual Media:

• It catches the attention of the audience because of its

artistic presentation.
• It teaches the audience to be more analytical in order to
visually process the message.
• It allows the artist to present the information and express
the message in a creative manner.
Limitation:

• It can be distracting.
• Its meaning could be interpreted differently because
of its artistic presentation.
• It takes time and effort to produce visual
information, which can be costly, too.
