Surface Modeling
➢ NX surface functions
○ Studio Surface
○ Through Curves Mesh
○ Through Curves
○ Bridge Surface
➢ Types of continuity (G0, G1, and G2)
➢ NX Realize Shape
○ Primitive shape insertion
○ Cage wireframe to part geometry
Drafting
The Drafting application is based on creating views from an existing solid model
Drafting makes it easy to quickly create a 2D drawing with orthographic views,
section views, imported view, auxiliary views, dimensions and other annotations.

Drafting
Some of the useful features of Drafting application are:
➢ Different views of parts
○ Front, bottom, etc.
○ Importing exploded views
➢ Each view is associated directly with the solid. Thus, when the solid is
changed, the drawing directly updates including the views and dimensions
➢ Drafting annotations (dimensions, labels, and symbols with leaders) are
placed directly on the drawing and are also updated automatically when the
solid is changed
Accessing the Drafting Application
➢ File -> New -> Drawing
-> Select Sheet Size
○ Manual insertion of
selected
components
Accessing the Drafting Application
➢ Or turn it on from the
Application tab
○ Dialog boxes will
appear for sheet
size and inserting
views of part(s)
Inserting Parts into Drafting
1. Home → Base View → Insert selected
parts into drawing
a. Model View → Top, Bottom, Left, Isometric, etc.
b. Click on the drawing sheet when done
c. Insert projected views if necessary
2. View Creation Wizard

Exploded Views in Drafting
➢ You cannot import an exploded view from an assembly into drafting
➢ Start with the drawing
○ Load the assembly
○ Go into “Modeling” mode (ctrl+M)
○ Resource Bar → Part Navigator → Right-click “Model Views” → “Add
View” → Type “Explosion”
○ Perform the exploded view as discussed in last class
○ Go back to drafting (ctrl + shift + d)
○ “Base View” → Select your drawing file → View → Explosion

Useful Features in NX Drafting
➢ Projected View → Create different orientations from a “parent” view
➢ Detail View → Enlarge a particular portion of the part(s)
➢ View Break → Split the part into portions so as to remove repetitive geometry
➢ Section View → Cross-section the part to view its internal structure
○ Section Line → Manual sketching of section lines
➢ Rapid Dimension → Show the dimensions of the part(s)
Projected View
➢ “Projects”
alternate views of
a part from a
parent view
Detail View
➢ Zooms in a
particular feature
of interest →
useful for fine
features
Section View
➢ Cross-section the
part to view its
internal structure
➢ “Section-View”
function
○ Choose “Section
Line” or select
features on part
Rapid Dimension
➢ Dimension the part
through “Rapid
Dimension”
➢ Only specify
necessary
dimensions → no
redundancies
➢ Measure from one
end to various
points
○ Reference should be chosen based
on how part is machined
Preferences and Settings
➢ All display options
can be found
under Settings or
