Quarter 3, Wk.2 - Module 2
(What Happens When
Volcanoes Erupt?)
What I Need to Know
After successfully completing this lesson, you are expected to:
Identify the different materials that come out from the volcano.
Explain what happens when volcanoes erupt.
Do the activity to recall the important
concepts of the previous module.
Directions: Complete the concept map below on types of volcanoes and its eruptive styles. Select your answer the from the word box.
Vulcanian
Phreatic

Plinian
Phreatomagmatic
Cinder cone
Strombolian

Advantages of volcanic
eruption.
Soil Fertility
It supply nutrient to the soil.
Volcanic ash usually holds
minerals that are useful to the
plants. The fertility of soil is due
to the released of potassium and
phosphorus.
Advantages of
volcanic eruption.
Atmospheric Cooling
As volcano erupts it releases ash
and sulphur gas into the stratosphere. The
presence of these materials in the
atmosphere result to cooling of the
atmosphere which desirable for the
people.
Advantages of
volcanic eruption.
Land Formation
When volcano erupts it
releases lava from the earth
surface. And when these materials
cools off and solidify, it forms
different spectacular landforms.
Advantages of
volcanic eruption.
Tourism
The spectacular scenery created by
volcanic eruptions attracts tourists. This
brings income to an area.
Raw material
Volcanic material can be made in to blocks for
construction purposes. People became creative
also by making pots out of the ashfall from the
volcanic eruption
Disadvantages of
volcanic eruption.
Pollution
Volcanoes produce a wide variety of hazards
that can kill and damage any life forms .This
include air pollution, water pollution and land
pollution.
Global Warming
During volcanic eruption mixture of greenhouse
gases expelled in to the air. These gases
influenced to heating of the earth surface which
result to global warming.
Have you heard about the damage caused by the eruption
of Mount Pinatubo in Zambales? The eruption of Pinatubo
in 1991, one of the longest volcanic eruptions, has caused
the decrease in the Earth’s surface temperature for almost
two years. The strong winds during its eruption spread the
aerosol particles from the plume around the globe. The
result was a measurable cooling of the Earth’s surface for
a period of almost two years.
Isit possible for volcanic eruptions to affect our climate in
the Philippines or other parts of the world? Volcanoes can
impact climate change because volcanic gases like sulfur
dioxide can cause global cooling, while volcanic carbon
dioxide, a greenhouse gas, has the potential to promote
global warming.

Geothermal Energy
The following are energy sources in the
Philippines. In this activity you are going
to look for the following words found
below the puzzle. You can look for the
Activity 1: words vertically, horizontally and
Crossword Puzzle diagonally. Enjoy your word search
activity!
Choose the word which is included to
Activity 2: WHAT’S build a geothermal power plant. Draw a
BOX ( ) inside of that word if it is part of
INSIDE A the power plant.
GEOTHERMAL POWER
PLANT?
1. FIRE 4. GENERATOR 7. SOLAR
5. WATERFALLS 8. TURBINE
2. STEAM
3. WINDMILL 6. TRANSFORMER
PROCEDURE: Read each of the
statement below and arrange the
Activity 3: SEQUENCING following steps on what comes first up to
STEPS for the OPERATION the last through writing the numbers 1, 2,
of GEOTHERMAL POWER 3, 4, and 5.
PLANT
_____The electrical energy from the generator will travel to the
transformer.
_____Pumping the hot water from geothermal energy.
_____Cold water is being pumped back again to the underground.
_____Steam supplies the turbine causes to rotate.
_____The generator produces electricity.
A geothermal power plant generates electricity from geothermal energy (Earth’s heat
source). The main components of this power plants include:
TURBINE- composed of wheels which is driven by a
water or a gas,
GENERATOR- type of machine made up of coils of
wire to produce electricity, and
TRANSFORMER- electrical device used to transfer
electrical charges.
Here are the basic steps on how this geothermal power plant generates electricity:
1. Pumping the hot water
from geothermal resource.
2. How water will travel
through pipelines and
reaching a particular tank
where it turns into steam
(water in a gas form).
Here are the basic steps on how this geothermal power plant generates electricity:
3. The steam supplies the
turbine which causes to
rotate in a continuous
process..
4. A turbine is connected
to a generator which
electricity is being
produced.
Here are the basic steps on how this geothermal power plant generates electricity:
5. From the generator,
electrical energy will travel
into a transformer which is
responsible to transport to
the different power lines.
6. The excess steam pass
through a cooling station
where it condenses (gas to
liquid).
Here are the basic steps on how this geothermal power plant generates electricity:
7. The cold water is being
pumped back again to the
geothermal source to start
the process again.
Complete the given flow chart by
writing the answers inside each of the

Fill in the missing words below. Choose your answer inside the box.
There are different steps involve in generating electricity from the
geothermal energy. First, the ______ water is being _______ from the
geothermal reservoir through_______. This water will turn into _______
as it reaches to the surface. From this process, it will travel to a rotating
device called _______ which then connects to another device
called________. And at this point, there is now a production of_______.
The transformer will now supply the different ________. There are
portions of steam that becomes cold ______ because it passes through
a cooling station. And it will be pumped again to the geothermal reservoir
to ______ a new process.
