PVOSBM Approach in

Teaching Beginning Reading

Elma C. Refugio
Master Teacher 1
PVOSBM
Phono-Visual Oral
Sound Blending Meaning
PVOSBM Approach
▪ Enables children to attack words by producing the
individual sounds or phonemes that compose them.
▪ Starts with the vowel sounds
▪ Gives the pupil power to attack a word he has not
previously seen
▪ Gives him security and confidence and a feeling of
doing things easily
PVOSBM APPROACH HAS THREE STAGES.
▪STAGE 1- Hear, See, Say
▪ STAGE 2- Sound Blending
▪ STAGE 3- Meaning
STAGE 1- Hear, See, Say
•Model the production of the sound.
•Show the printed symbol representing the
sound
• Pupils say the sound correctly.
STAGE 2- Sound Blending
•Put the sounds together to form
syllable and word.
STAGE 3: Meaning Stage
• Show pictures to give meaning of the words
being formed.
• Use the word in meaningful context.
Sequence of the lessons in PVOSBM
•Vowel sounds ( e, i, a, o, u )
• Start with the consonants following the sequence of the letters in
the alphabet.
(Words formed are controlled based on the sound being studied)
• Long vowel sounds
• Blends
With any other approaches if used with a good dose
of common sense, industry and sincerity hopefully
will contribute not only to the shaping of efficient
beginning readers but will also induce children to
love reading, love learning through reading and
eventually love schooling.
