INTRODUCTION TO CNC
Computer numerical control (CNC) is a manufacturing method that automates the control,
movement and precision of machine tools through the use of preprogrammed computer
software, which is embedded inside the tools.
CNC is commonly used in manufacturing for machining metal and plastic parts. Mills, lathes,
routers, drills, grinders, water jets and lasers are common cutting tools whose operations can
also be automated with CNC. It can also be used to control nonmachine tools, such as
welding, electronic assembly and filament-winding machines.
HISTORY OF CNC MACHINE
• The cost of these machines is very high as compared to manually operated machines.
• CNC machine parts are expensive.
• Maintenance costs are higher for CNC machines.
• The machine requires expensive equipment to operate.
• The cost of CNC machines is much higher than a manually operated machine.
• Maintenances costs are significantly higher in the case of CNC.
• This does not eliminate the need for expensive equipment
Application of CNC Machine:
CNC machines are used in almost every manufacturing industry. With increasing demand in the
manufacturing industry, the use of CNC has also increased. The machine tools that come with
CNC are lathes, mills, shapers, welding, etc.
1 .AEROSPACE INDUSTRY The accuracy needed to manufacture every
component of an airplane is increased by CNC.
i. Landing gear components
2 .AUTOMOTIVE: One of the key markets for CNC machining is the automotive
industry.
Gearboxes.
Engine parts.
