By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
 Explain the various functions and meanings of modal verbs,

including expressing ability, possibility, permission, obligation,


necessity, advice, and prediction.

 Recognize the nuances and differences in meaning between

different modal verbs in specific contexts.


OVERVIEW
This lesson covers the topics of:

 Modal Verb and its variations


MODALS
 Modal verbs refer to a specific group of auxiliary verbs that

play a crucial role in expressing various attitudes,


possibilities, obligations, capacities, prohibition,
probabilities, requests, suppositions and permissions.

 They are commonly used in writing and speaking to convey

nuanced meanings and present information with precision.


MODALS
 In sentence structure, modal verbs are not conjugated with additional
‘-s/-es’ at the end of the verb for the third person singular.
 Structure
 Subject + Modal Verb + Base Form of the Verb.
 Subject + Modal Verb + not + Base Form of the Verb.
 Modal Verb + Subject + Base Form of the Verb?

 Example:
 “She can swim in the sea.”
 “They must not attend the class to understand the lesson.”
 “May I come in, please?”
