Can we perceive what is happening in the world when
it is below our sensual threshold ?
Can we pick up signals from the world without using
our usual sensory channels?

Subliminal perception
Unintentional/ subconscious / unconscious.
1950s .
Stimulus is below threshold/ limen, though we perceive it.
Presentation of stimulus is very weak/dim and/or very brief in
time and if person could make it meaningful = Subliminal
perception .
Subliminal perception is supposed to occur when stimulus is too
weak to be perceived yet person is influenced by it.
It not without awareness.
Weak ??
Limen-for absolute threshold i.e. point where stimulus could be
detected 50% . So 49% is subliminal.!!??
Subliminal stimulus means too weak to detect .
Lot of chance to make illusions.

Subliminal perception
Priming
Method to measure unconscious cognitive processes, in
which a person is exposed to information ( implicit or
explicit ) and is later tested to see whether the information
affect the behavior or performance on another task.
Findings –
Word flashed subliminally are related to some personality
traits ‘honesty’ when they judge a person seen this trait.
You know more than you know .
However SP hard to demonstrate in laboratory.

Coco cola experiments , 1950s
Subliminal persuasion technique used to manipulate
attitude of person.
Attempt SP were disappointing.

Perceptual Defense
Selective perception
Process by which individuals perceive what they want to.
how we categorize and interpret sensory information in a
way that favors one category or interpretation over another.
A form of bias because we interpret information in a way
that is matching with our existing values and beliefs.
two types:
Low level – Perceptual vigilance
High level – Perceptual defense

Perceptual Defense
Perceptual Defense - sometimes when a person actually does
not perceive specific sensory input.
such as a swear word or a vulgar image,
presumably because she/he has a filtering mechanism or
"perceptual wall" preventing the sensory data from being
processed.
Well known.
Reaction time is more when word is very abusive.
More distortion
Facial expression changes.
Subject feel awkward and reluctant.
Except – person’s own interpretation.
Influencing factors -Culture, age , gender

Extra-Sensory Perception(ESP)
Extrasensory perception (ESP) or Sixth Sense
J. B. Rhine –parapsychology.
Perception that occurs without the known sensory
processes.
Telepathy
Clairvoyance (supernormal awareness of objects or events
not necessarily known to others;
Precognition (knowledge of the future).
Based on the research on playing card and identifying it .
Not scientifically proved.
