Module 12 Model of A System
Module 12 Model of A System
• In this module, we
shall examine what
it means by
developing a system
model
1
Motivation
• How do we model a
system?
2
Why Model?
• Sometimes it is of
interest to study a
system to understand
the relationships
between its
components or to
predict how the
system will operate
under a new policy.
3
Ideally . . .
• To study the
system, it is
sometimes
possible to
experiment with
the system itself.
• However, this is
not always
possible.
4
Why not the Real System?
6
Example
• In case of a consulting
job for the simulation of
a redesigned port in
western Australia.
• At $200 millions for a
loading/unloading berth,
it's not advisable to
invest that amount only
to find that the berth is
adequate or not.
8
Model: What it is?
• A model is defined as a
representation of a system for the
purpose of studying the system.
• For most studies, it is only necessary
to consider those aspects of the
system that affect the problem
under investigation.
• These aspects are represented in a
model of the system; the model, by
definition, is a simplification of the
system.
• On the other hand, the model
should be sufficiently detailed to
permit valid conclusions to be
drawn about the real system
9
Variety of Models: Same System
10
Summary
• We talked about discrete
and continuous systems
• We also discussed some
examples
