INTRODUCTION
• Topographic surveying is the detailed measurement and representation of the physical features of an area
of land, including both natural and man-made elements.
• It involves determining the precise position of features, measuring horizontal distances, elevation
changes, and directions to create a highly accurate map that shows the layout and characteristics of the
land.
• Topographical surveys are commonly carried out by land survey teams to provide information including a
scaled drawing representing the land contours, terrain, and other site features with an extremely detailed
degree of precision. Topographic Map is the result of a topographic survey.
IMPORTANCE/APPLICATIONS OF A METHODS OF TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY:
TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY: • Aerial method
• Site plans and layouts for construction. • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) method
• Property boundaries and subdivisions. • Remote sensing method
• Estate planning. • Ground survey method

recommended for this project.
LITERATURE REVIEW
• Adepoju, M. O., & Adebayo, A. O. (2019) investigated the integration of GPS and GIS techniques for
topographic mapping in southwestern Nigeria. Through a case study, they highlighted the synergistic
benefits of combining GPS-derived elevation data with GIS spatial analysis, enabling accurate and detailed
topographic mapping essential for various land management applications.
• Lawal, D. U., & Alaga, A. T. (2018) conducted a comparative analysis of traditional and modern surveying
methods for topographic mapping in rural Nigeria. By evaluating the effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and
accuracy of both approaches, they provide valuable insights into the selection of appropriate surveying
techniques based on project requirements and resource constraints.
• Oyedepo, J. A., & Oke, S. A. (2020) explored the utilization of drone technology for topographic surveys in
urban development projects in Nigeria. Oyedepo and Oke demonstrated the efficiency and accuracy of
drones in capturing high-resolution topographic data, thus providing valuable insights into land planning
and infrastructure development.
• Adebayo, F. A., & Olagunju, R. E. (2017) presented a comprehensive review of remote sensing
applications in topographic surveys, focusing on advancements and challenges specific to Nigeria. By
analyzing the strengths and limitations of remote sensing technologies such as satellite imagery and
LiDAR, they offer valuable insights into optimizing the use of remote sensing data for accurate topographic
mapping and monitoring.
SCOPE OF STUDY
• This project work covers the entire premises
of WTC Primary School, Enugu.
• The school is located at New Layout, Ogui,
Enugu North Local Government Area,
Enugu State.
• It has an approximate size of 1.63 Hectares
Google Earth imagery of WTC Primary School, Enugu
PROBLEM STATEMENT
WTC Primary School, Enugu has no existing topographic map. It is essential that such map
should be produced for the purpose of further development and physical framework of the area
like drainage system, slope determination, etc.
AIM A N D OBJECTIVES
The aims and objectives of our project work include:
• Carrying out a perimeter survey of our project site (WTC Primary School, Enugu) to determine its area.
• Collection of relevant data (detailing) for the production of a topographic map of our project site
• The representation of both natural and artificial features within the project site using appropriate symbols.
• Location of the correct positions of the features within the project site
• Showing the topographical nature (spot height and contour) of the site
• The production of a topographic map of the project site showing the relative position of all features, both
natural and artificial.
INSTRUMENTATION
The equipment and the instruments that will be used to carry
out the topographic survey of the school are as follows:
• Differential Global positioning system (DGPS)
• Hammer and pegs (wooden).
• Beacons
• Measuring tape
• Two Tripod stands.
• Matchets.
• Field book and pen.
• Softwares like AutoCAD, Surfer, etc.

school premises, we shall be transferring control
from government control (one at Okpara Square) to
the school. With this, two controls shall be
established. One of the two newly established
controls shall be used for check.
• We shall then proceed with a perimeter survey of
the school, detailing, spot height, and contour
observation.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
• To produce a topographic map of the school, showing the position of features, spot height, and
contours of the terrain.
• To determine the undulating nature of the school compound, for the construction of drainage.
• To determine the total area of the school and define its exact boundary.
EXPECTED RESULT
The expected result/end product shall be a topographic map of WTC Primary School. It
shall depict cultural and natural features, and shall also represent the undulating nature of
the school terrain using contour lines.
