What is code switching?

Code Switching

In general, code switching is a term in linguistics which refers

to the use of more than one language in conversation.
Code Switching according to ex-
perts
• Hymes (1974) defines code-switching as “a common term for alternative
use of two or more languages, varieties of a language or even speech
styles”
• Bokamba (1989) defines code-switching is the mixing of words, phrases,
and sentences from two distinct grammatical (sub) systems across
sentence boundaries within the same speech event.
What is the function of code switching?

Code switching is a way of the people to deliver a

meaning to the other people to enhance
understanding.
How to use code switching

Code-switching can happen in the context of speaking a different

language or switching the verbiage to match that of the audience. There
are many ways in which code-switching is employed, such as when a
speaker is unable to express themselves adequately in a single language
or to signal an attitude towards something. Moreover, Code-switching can
occur between sentences or within a single sentence.
Types of code switching

There are three types of code switching, such as:

• Tag code switching
• Intrasentential code switching
• Intersentential code switching
Tag code Switching
A tag code-switching happens when a bilingual inserts short expressions
(tag) from different language at the end of his/her utterances.

Example:
“That’s a good answer, tepat!”
“I really love it, serius.”
“Really? Itu pasti seru!”
Intrasentential code switching
Intrasentential switching, in which switches occur within a clause or sen-
tence boundary. It can take the form such as, code changing, code
mixing, insertion, and congruent lexicalizations.

Example:
“Menurutku that’s a good idea!”
“Turn on your laptop and kerjakan tugasnya sekarang!”
Intersentential code switching
Intersentential switching, in which a change of language occurs at
sentence levels. An intersenstential code switching happens when there
is a complete sentence in a foreign language uttered between two
sentences in a base language.

For example:
Ini kue jaman dahulu, tahun 60an, It’s oldies but goldies, they say. Tapi
rasanya masih lebih enak yang dulu.
Conclusion
Code switching is a term in linguistics referring to using more
than one language or variety in conversation. Moreover, code switching is
very important in every situation in order to give better explanation of
the content subject to the people.
There are three types of code switching found in this study such
as, Tag code switching, Inter-sentential code switching, and
Intra-sentential code switching. Moreover, Code switching is a strategy for
people to transfer the knowledge to make the people understand better
the content. The inter-sentential code switching is used to explain the
subject again based on the context. The other type is the intra-sentential
code switching which occurs within a phrase and a clause. Then, Tag
code switching occurs by inserting a single word such as noun,
preposition, conjunction, adjective and suffix.
