METHODS TO

IMPROVE
PRODUCTIVITY
INTRODUCTIO
N
Productivity is a critical measure of the efficiency and
effectiveness of operations in any organization. In the context of
operations management, increasing productivity involves
optimizing various processes to maximize output while
minimizing input and waste. This can be achieved through a
range of methods, including the adoption of advanced
technologies, process reengineering, employee training, and
strategic resource allocation.
Productivity – Concept (With Formula)

Productivity it is the relationship between the output generated

from a system and the inputs are used to create those outputs.

Productivity means a balance between all factors of production

that will give the maximum output with the smallest effort.

Productivity = (Outputs produced /Inputs used)

Productivity – Concept

Productivity can measured with the help of

following formula:
LEAN MANUFACTURING

Lean manufacturing is a methodology for

maximizing productivity while minimizing waste in
manufacturing systems. It's a way of producing for
the customer, with the focus on eliminating anything
that doesn't add value.
Lean manufacturing is a philosophy that can be
applied to any type of manufacturing operation. It is
not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can be a
powerful tool for improving efficiency and
profitability.
SIX SIGMA

The Six Sigma method uses a step-by-step approach called

DMAIC, an acronym that stands for Define, Measure, Analyze,
Improve, and Control. According to Six Sigma adherents, a
business may solve any seemingly unsolvable problem by
following these five steps.
The 5 Steps of Six Sigma

 Define
 Measure
 Analyze
 Improve
 Control
KAIZEN

Kaizen focuses on eliminating waste, improving productivity, and

achieving sustained continual improvement in targeted activities
and processes of an organization.
Kaizen aims for improvements in productivity, effectiveness and
safety. But people who follow this approach often unlock a
number of other benefits, too, including:
Less waste – inventory is used more efficiently, as are employee
skills.
People are more satisfied – they have a direct impact on the way
that things are done.
Improved commitment – team members have more of a stake in
their job, and are more inclined to contribute fully in their role.
Improved retention – satisfied and engaged people are
more likely to stay.
QUALITY CIRCLES

Quality Circles, also known as QC or Kaizen Circles, are small

groups of employees who voluntarily come together to identify,
analyze, and solve quality-related problems
within an organization.

The primary objectives of Quality Circles are:

 Problem Solving
 Continuous Improvement
 Skill Development

TRAINING

Training programmes are given to employees on the basis on

quality and safety.
By providing comprehensive training program ,it focused on the
productivity in operations.
Training enhance the skills, optimize the processes, improve the
quality, increase the efficiency, faster problem resolution,
adaption, employee engagement.
VALUE ANALYSIS

Value analysis is a set of techniques, knowledge, and skills used

to improve the value of a product by eliminating unnecessary
costs or improving its functions without compromising its quality,
reliability, and performance.
It involves understanding the components of a product
and related costs.
SAFETY PROTOCOLS

A safety protocol is a set of rules and guidelines designed to

keep people safe in various situations. It tells people what to do
and what not to do to avoid accidents, injuries, or other dangers.
RESEARCH

It is essential in the product management lifecycle because it

provides valuable insights that inform product development,
strategy, and decision-making.
Market research helps ensure that products meet user needs
and align with business objectives.
MATERIAL CONTROL

Material management is a function responsible for appropriate

planning, organizing, and controlling of activities concerned with
the flow of materials required by a manufacturing company.

Thus, the material management function encompasses a vast

range of activities, right from the material requirement planning,
to sourcing and purchasing materials. It also involves ensuring
optimum stock & movement of materials within the company to
ensure smooth production.
PRODUCTION PLANNING
AND CONTROL
• Production planning and control is the process of efficiently
managing all aspects of the production process, from
scheduling and resource allocation to ensuring that the right
materials are available at the right time. It involves
coordinating various activities to optimize production output,
minimize costs, and meet quality standards. Essentially, it's
about planning what to produce, when to produce it, and how
to produce it, while ensuring smooth operations throughout
the manufacturing process.
MAINTANCE

Maintenance in productivity refers to the activities aimed at

preserving or restoring the efficiency and functionality of
equipment, machinery, or systems within a production
environment. It involves regular inspections, repairs, and
preventive measures to minimize downtime, extend equipment
lifespan, and ensure optimal performance. Effective
maintenance practices are essential for maximizing productivity
by reducing disruptions and avoiding costly breakdowns in
production processes.

CONCLUSION

Enhancing productivity in operations management requires a

systematic and technical approach that leverages state-of-the-art
technologies such as automation and AI, optimizes production
workflows through lean manufacturing and Six Sigma
methodologies, and employs advanced organizational strategies
like matrix management to foster cross-functional collaboration.
Additionally, investing in continuous employee training programs,
ensuring robust financial planning and resource allocation, and
implementing strategic management frameworks such as
Balanced Scorecard can drive performance.
