Module 2 Overview

System and Application Software

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. Explain the difference of System and Application software.

2. Identify the different programs and apps.
3. Organize data using a spreadsheet application.
Lesson 1
System Software Operating Systems
and Utility Programs

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you can:

1. Describe system software and utility programs.

2. Explain the functions of an operating system.
3. Identify the types of operating system.
Introduction
When you acquire a laptop, desktop computer, or
smartphone, it usually has system software installed. System
software is consisting of programs that control and maintain
operations of the computer and its devices. Software is
needed to transform user commands into a form that the
computer can understand. The primary component of system
software is the operating system. Usually, utility programs
work to support the functions of the operating system, like
allowing the users to manage their files, check and perform
maintenance on their computers, check for computer
viruses, and uninstall a program or application that is no
longer used.
Most Popular Operating Systems in 2021
Activity
Search via Internet the different Operating Systems,
their features, and utility programs. List at least five
various features and utilities for each operating
system. Do they have similar utility programs? If yes,
why do you think they have the same utility
programs?
Analysis

Can we choose what operating

system we want to install on our
computers or mobile devices?
Why yes or no?
Analysis

Are we secured in using a system

software?
Analysis

Are there any programs in the

system software that helps the
user to utilize their files,
installed programs, resources,
and the like?
Abstraction
System Software
 It is a background program that controls a computer
system.
 It is the facilitator of application programs and the
computer systems hardware and between the
computer and the user.
Application Software
These are programs that allow a user to work a
particular job or task on a computer.

Application Software Examples

Operating System
 It is a program that manages the activities
taking place in a computer system.
 It is a set of programs containing
commands or instructions that organize
all computer hardware resources.
Functions of an Operating System
A. Interfacing and communicating with users
- This is the way the user and the computer
communicate to each other using the
Graphical User Interface (GUI).
B. Booting the computer
- Is a process of starting or restarting a computer.
C. Configuring devices
- Device drivers are always needed, sometimes it will
be automatically installed

C. Configuring devices
- Device drivers are always needed, sometimes it will
be automatically installed when the user plugs their
device into the computer.
Functions of an Operating System
A. Managing and monitoring resources and jobs
1. Operating systems monitor their resources while it is running.
2. Operating systems manages the computer's resources like the software,
disk and the memory to make it available when they are needed.

B. File management
1. Operating systems keep track of the files stored on a computer so they
can be retrieved when it is needed.
2. Security Operating systems use a bunch of security procedures to prevent
unauthorized access of system resources.
Differences Among Operating Systems

1. The first operating system uses a command

line.
2. Currently, operating systems are using GUI
or Graphical User Interface.

Command-Line vs. Graphical User Interface

Types of Operating Systems

A. Personal Operating Systems

- Also known as Desktop Operating Systems
- Used to be installed on a single computer
B. Server Operating Systems
- Also known as Network Operating Systems
- Used to be installed on a network server to have
multiple user's access to
A network and the resources.
Utility Programs

A. A sort of software that accomplishes a specific goal.

Mostly it is managing or maintaining the computer
system.

B. Various utilities are built into the operating system

to find files, backup files, view images, restore files,
etc.

C. It can be available as a stand-alone product like

security suites (antivirus)
A. Search Tools
- Used to search for files on the user's storage device
B. Diagnostic Programs
- Used to evaluate the computer system and make
recommendations for fixing the
errors found.
C. Disk Management Programs
- Used to diagnose and repair problems related to the user's
hard drive
D. File Compression Programs
- Used to reduce the size of files to utilize the space on a
storage medium.
- Zip and unzip files
E. Uninstall Utilities
Used to remove programs from the user's hard drive

F. Cleanup Utilities
Used to delete temporary files

G. Backup and Recovery Utilities

Used to backup and restore processes
