HEIGHT AND

RANGE OF
PROJECTILE
For positions:
𝑥 = 𝑥0 + 𝑣𝑜𝑥𝑡 and 𝑦 = 𝑦0 + 𝑣0𝑦𝑡 − 1 /2 𝑔𝑡^2
where: x – final position along x 𝑣𝑜𝑦 – initial velocity along the y-axis
𝑥0 - initial position along x t – time
𝑣𝑜𝑥 – initial velocity along the x-axis g – acceleration due to gravity
y – final position along y (-9.80 m/s2)
𝑦0 - initial position along x
Sample Problems:
1.A stone is thrown horizontally from the top of a 15-meter tall cliff with an initial speed of
10 m/s. Calculate the time it takes for the stone to hit the ground and the horizontal
distance it travels before hitting the ground.
2. A ball is kicked at an angle of 45∘ with respect to the ground with a speed of 20 m/s.
Calculate the maximum height reached by the ball.
For Velocities: 𝑣𝑥 = 𝑣𝑜𝑥 and 𝑣𝑦 = 𝑣𝑜𝑦 − 𝑔𝑡

𝑣𝑥 – final velocity along the x-axis 𝑣𝑜𝑦 – initial velocity along the y-axis
𝑣𝑜𝑥 – initial velocity along the x-axis t – time
𝑣𝑦 – final velocity along the y-axis g – acceleration due to gravity (-9.80 m/s2)

Sample Problem:
1. A soccer ball is kicked horizontally from a height of 2 meters with an initial speed of 15
m/s. Calculate the horizontal and vertical components of its velocity 1 second after being
kicked.
2. A ball is thrown upward with an initial velocity of 20 m/s. Calculate its horizontal and
vertical components of velocity after 2 seconds.
For initial velocity: v0x= v0 cos θ and v0y= v0 sin θ
where:
vox – initial velocity along the x-axis
voy – initial velocity along the y-axis
t – time
θ - angle between the initial velocity and the x-axis
Sample Problems:
1.A soccer player kicks a ball with an initial speed of 20 m/s at an angle of 30 degrees above
the horizontal. Calculate the initial horizontal and vertical components of the ball's velocity.
2. A stone is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of 15 m/s. Calculate the initial
horizontal and vertical components of its velocity.
Hence, the equations of motion become, 𝑥 = (𝑣0 cos 𝜃)𝑡 and 𝑦 = (𝑣0 sin 𝜃)𝑡 − 1/2 𝑔𝑡^2 for
the positions and 𝑣𝑥 = 𝑣0 cos 𝜃 and 𝑣𝑦 = 𝑣0 sin 𝜃 for the velocities.
where: x – final position along x-axis
y – final position along y-axis
𝑣𝑜 – initial velocity
𝑣𝑦 - final velocity along y-axis
𝑣𝑥 - final velocity along x-axis
t – time
g – Acceleration due to gravity (-9.8o m/s^2)
Sample Problems:
1.A football player kicks a ball at an angle of 45∘ with the ground with an initial
speed of 20 m/s. Calculate the horizontal and vertical positions of the ball after 3
seconds.
2. A stone is thrown vertically upward with an initial speed of 15 m/s. Calculate the
vertical velocity of the stone after 2 seconds.
Sample Problems:
1.A ball is launched horizontally from the top of a cliff that is 25 meters high with an initial
speed of 10 m/s. Calculate:
a) The time it takes for the ball to hit the ground.
b) The horizontal distance the ball travels before hitting the ground.

2. A stone is thrown upward from the ground with an initial speed of 15 m/s at an angle
of 60 degrees above the horizontal. Calculate:
a) The maximum height reached by the stone.
b) The total time of flight.

3. A rocket is launched at an angle of 75 degrees above the horizontal with a speed of 30 m/s.
Calculate:
a) The initial horizontal and vertical components of the rocket's velocity.
b) The vertical velocity of the rocket after 2 seconds.
