consists of two “houses” (or parts, or sections):
• The U.S. Senate

the Congress of the United States

The U.S. Supreme Court
• The Judicial Branch of the U.S.
government is actually called the
Federal Court or the Federal Court
system and is made up of many courts.
There are hundreds of people who are
appointed as Federal Judges and they
serve throughout the United States.
• The Supreme Court is the highest court in
America and the Chief Justice is the highest
ranking legal judge in the U.S.
• The current Chief Justice is Chief Justice
Roberts and the court is referred to as, “The
Roberts’ Court”.
• The members of the Supreme Court are
appointed “for life”.
• “Balance of power” implies (means)
that no one branch of the government
has more power than the other two.

• Someone might refer to this system as


being a system of “checks and balance”.
