What is Input Device
• There are two types of devices that allow
interaction between the computer and an end user: input devices and output devices. • These devices are hardware and component parts of the computer system • Those are Keyboard, Mouse, Microphone, Scanner, Barcode Reader, Joy Stick etc. Keyboard • A simple device comprising keys and each key denotes either an alphabet, number or number commands which can be given to a computer for various actions to be performed • It has a modified version of typewriter keys • The keyboard is an essential input device and computer and laptops both use keyboards to give commands to the computer Mouse • It is also known as a pointing device Using mouse we can directly click on the various icons present on the system and open up various files and programs . • A mouse comprises 3 buttons on the top and one trackball at the bottom which helps in selecting and moving the mouse around, respectively Joy Stick
• It is a device which comprises a stick which is
attached at an angle to the base so that it can be moved and controlled Mostly used to control the movement in video games. • Apart from a computer system, a joystick is also used in the cockpit of an aeroplane, wheelchairs, cranes, trucks, etc. to operate them well Microphone
• Using a microphone, sound can be stored in a
device in its digital form • It converts sound into an electrical signal • To record or reproduce a sound created using a microphone, it needs to be connected with an amplifier. Scanner • This device can scan images or text and convert it into a digital signal • When we place any piece of a document on a scanner, it converts it into a digital signal and displays it on the computer screen Barcode Reader • It is a kind of an optical scanner • It can read bar codes • A source of light is passed through a bar code, and its aspects and details are displayed on the screen. Light pen. • The first light pen was invented by Ben Gurley in 1959. • A light pen is a type of pointing input device that detects light and is frequently used to select or alter text or data on a screen. • A light pen is used to draw text and diagrams or select the object with the user interface system in the CRT monitor. A light pen helps a user to select the displayed object on the monitor with more positional accuracy than the normal touch screen. Touch screen. • A touch screen is a computer display screen that is sensitive to human touch, allowing a user to interact with the computer by touching pictures or words on the screen. • Touchscreens have become very common on tablet computers, smart phones and other mobile devices. Increasingly, regular laptop and desktop computers use touchscreen displays so users can use both touch as well as more traditional ways of input. What is an output device • A piece of equipment/hardware which gives out the result of the entered input, once it is processed (i.e. converts data from machine language to a human- understandable language), is called an output device. For example printer, monitor, etc. • Input is any data that is sent to the computer for processing. Output is the result of processed data that we can see through some other devices.
• It is a hardware component, and it
uses the data that is has received from the computer to carry out a task Output devices are: 1. Braille reader 2. Speakers 3. GPS 4. Headphones 5. Monitor 6. Printer 7. Projector 8. Optical mark reader 9. Plotter 10. Digital camera. Braille reader • A Braille reader, also called a Braille display, is an electronic device that allows a blind person to read the text displayed on a computer monitor. • Braille readers come in various forms, including large units (about the size of a computer keyboard) and smaller units, designed to work with computers. Speakers • A computer speaker is a piece of hardware attached to a computer system used to produce sound. • Connect to your TV or other devices. You can connect your speakers to your TV or other devices for a better sound experience. • Use as a home theatre system. • Take calls. GPS • GPS stands for Global Positioning System. • The GPS project was started by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1973. • The first prototype spacecraft was launched in 1978 and the full constellation of 24 satellites became operational in 1993. • Originally limited to use by the United States military,. Headphones • Headphones are a pair of small loudspeaker drivers worn on or around the head over a user's ears. • Headphones let a single user listen to an audio source privately. • The man behind the invention of the first modern headphones was the American engineer Nathaniel Baldwin. • Headphones come in many different sizes from big to small. They are also known as earphones, stereophones, headsets or even 'cans'. Monitor • A computer monitor is an output device that displays information in pictorial or textual form. • This allowed the engineers operating the computer to monitor the internal state of the machine. • So this panel of lights came to be known as the 'monitor'. Printer • In the field of computing, a printer is considered a peripheral device that serves the purpose of creating a permanent representation of text or graphics. • Different types of printers are available for use, including inkjet printers, thermal printers, laser printers, and 3D printers. • The first computer printer designed was a mechanically driven apparatus by Charles Babbage. • The introduction of the low-cost laser printer in 1984 Projector • A projector or image projector is an optical device that projects an image (or moving images) onto a surface, commonly a projection screen. • Most projectors create an image by shining a light through a small transparent lens, but some newer types of projectors can project the image directly. • The most common type of projector used today is called a video projector. Video projectors are digital replacements for earlier types of projectors such as slide projectors. Optical Mark Reader • Optical mark recognition (OMR) collects data from people by identifying markings on a paper. OMR enables the hourly processing of hundreds or even thousands of documents. • Students may remember completing quizzes or surveys that required them to use a pencil to fill in bubbles on paper. • The device can then measure the amount of light that passes through the paper. It will pick up any black marks on either side of the paper because they reduce the amount of light passing through. Plotter • Plotters are used to print graphical output on paper. It interprets computer commands and makes line drawings on paper using multicolored automated pens. • It is capable of producing graphs, drawings, charts, maps etc. • A plotter is a printer that interprets commands from a computer to make line drawings on paper with one or more automated pens. • Three types of plotters are most popular for their ability to allow you to create different designs. Digital camera • The first self-contained (portable) digital camera was created in 1975 by Steven Sasson of Eastman Kodak. • A digital camera, also called a digicam, is a camera that captures photographs in digital memory. • With a digital camera, the light entering through the lens strikes an image sensor. The signal output by the image sensor is processed within the camera to create image data, which is stored on the memory card. The image can be simultaneously viewed on the picture display. • A digital camera is an input device that captures images (and sometimes video) digitally. Digital cameras use an image sensor chip to capture the image. However, it can also be used as an output device.
