The Priciples of Art are used to organize the elements of Art to make a
composition .Every artist ,art student and a person who can appreciate art has a basic
understanding of the principles of Art.An art work is complete only when the
principles of Art are successfully executed.
The following are the principles of Art :
Balance :---- Balance is the Arrangement of Art
elements{line,form,shape,colour ,space,texture}to produce visual symmetry in a
composition .The visual weight and stability should be steady and justified otherwise
there is a discomfort in the visual appeal. Balance can be classified in to three main
types.
1. Formal or symmetrical balance :-- it is achieved by the artist ,placing objects in the
work in an equal sided arrangement, almost like a mirror image .
2 .Informal or Asymmetrical Balance :--- it is achieved by the Artist ,placing objects in
the work in slightly uneven or unequal arrangement. The difference can be of
shape,size or any other Element.
3.Radial Balance:----it occurs with in a circle where drawing extends from the centre.

Emphasis /dominace
• Dominance is the stress or insistence on one part over another to
draw attention on that part in a composition .Emphasis refers to the
created centre of interest or a focal point the place where your eye
first lands. It occurs when the artist manipulates and arranges the
elements of Art so that attention is drawn to a particular area. We
can use space and colour to create the desired emphasis.

Rhythm or Movement
• Rhythm or movement :----Rhythm or Movement refers to the
suggestion of motion through the use of various elements .
• It is the repetition of Art elements to provide a progressive and
related Movement .When we see an art work, consciously or sub
consciously Our Eyes move in a Rhythm.Generally a pattern repetition
or reoccurance of a design element is used to create rhythm which
establishes,a visual beat

another. Our eyes and nose in relation to our face and also our face in
relation to our whole body has to be drawn in correct proportion. In a

more interesting .Variety of Colours, Variety of Forms, textures etc is
what makes art attractive. But at the same time too much of it can be

manner

Harmony
• Paul cezanne (an artist from post Impressionism)stated,”When
painting is done right,Harmony Appears by itself. The more numerous
and varied they are,the more the effect is obtained and agreeable to
the eye”.

achieved in any work by using similar or related elements throughout
the work.Harmony Gives an uncomplicated look to a piece of Art.All
