Z Bus Building Methods
• The Z bus building methods includes
 Current injection Technique
 Z bus building algorithm
Current injection technique
• The voltage equations of a n bus passive network
can be written as

(1)

From Equation (1), it can be written as

Z bus building algorithm
To build Z bus using Z bus building algorithm, four type of
modifications are used.
 Modification 1: Connection of new bus to reference bus.
 Modification 2: Connection of new bus to old bus.
 Modification 3: Connection of old bus to reference bus.
 Modification 4: Connection of old bus to old bus.
Modification 1: Connection of new bus to
reference bus
Lets consider a n-bus passive network as
shown in the fig. Now if a new bus k is
connected to the reference bus through an
impedance Zb.
Then we can say :

The modified Zbus can be written as

Modification 2: Connection of new bus to
a old bus
Lets consider a n-bus passive network as shown
in the fig. Now if a new bus k is connected to
the old bus j through an impedance Zb.
From Fig. we can say-

So, the modified Zbus can be written as-

Modification 3: Connection of old bus to reference bus

• Lets consider a n-bus passive network as shown in

the fig. Now if a old bus j is connected to the
reference bus r through an impedance Zb.
• Lets consider that the bus j is connected to a
virtual bus k, such that Vk=0; So the network
voltage matrix can be written as-

• From the above equation it may write

Contd .

From the above two equation we can write -

From the above equation the modified Zbus can be written as-
Modification 3: Connection of two old buses.
• Lets consider that the two old buses bus i and
j are connected to each other through an
impedance Zb.
• For analysis it has been considered that
Vj>Vi. So, current of Ik is injected to bus i
from bus j.
• So, We can write-
Contd.

From the above equation the voltage matrix of the considered network can be
represented as-
Contd.
Eliminating Ik , and following the procedure of modification 3, the modified Zbus
can be written as-

The Zbus can be formed by step by step application of the mentioned 4

modifications (one bus at a time).
Example:

# Find the Zbus of the above shown network. Reactance of the branches are mentioned in the fig.
Solution
