1. Use an A4 sheet of paper
2. Create a brainstorm with ‘Civics’ in the middle
3. Branch off different concepts you remember learning about
RECAP CIVICS
across Year 7-9. Ideas could include ‘democracy’, ‘voting’,
YEARS 7-9 ‘Prime Minister’, ‘separation of powers’, ‘juries’, ‘the
constitution’, the ‘High Court’ etc.

What does this mean?


AUSTRALIA IS A ‘LIBERAL DEMOCRACY’

 Liberal = free
 Democracy = people power – we vote to elect our representatives
WHAT DOES DEMOCRACY LOOK LIKE IN AUSTRALIA?

You have two tasks:


 In discussion with students around you, write down in your notes:
1. What are some things you can do in Australia that you might not be able to do in other countries?
Think about democracy, personal freedoms etc.
2. Are there any countries where you think people might not have the same rights and freedoms as in
Australia?
KEY FEATURES OF AUSTRALIA’S SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT

 Australia’s government can be described as a constitutional monarchy, a federation, a


parliamentary democracy…. But what do any of these actually mean?
 There are some ‘key features’ that define the way that our government is run

 Democracy does not happen by accident! Without the following key features,
Australia would not be a democracy!

 The Key Features we will be learning about are:


 Constitutional monarchy
 The Constitution and the High Court
 Bicameral Parliaments
 Federalism and Division of power
 Accountability
 Representative government
 Protection of rights
 Separation of powers
KEY FEATURES OF AUSTRALIA’S SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT -
ACTIVITY

Now, you will have to work individually and in groups to learn and trade information about Australia’s
system of government
1. You will each be assigned some information on a piece of paper. Take down that information and then
hand the piece of paper back to the teacher
2. Then, you will form groups to learn about the other features of Australia’s system
3. Listen to each member of your group and write down their information about their key feature
4. Continue this until your whole sheet is filled out
WHAT DOES GOVERNMENT LOOK LIKE IN AUSTRALIA?

 Does it look like ‘charismatic’ MP for the seat of Kennedy in Queensland, Bob Katter?

 (He formed his own party and called it ‘Katter’s Australia Party’! How fun!
HE’S EVEN GOT AN ELECTION AD WHERE HE PUMPS IRON!
