TYPING

METHODS

RANVEER SHANKAR SRIVASTAVA

Intro
TYPING
Typing methods include touch typing, hunt-and-peck, and
hybrid typing. Touch typing uses all ten fingers without looking
at the keyboard, enabling high speed and accuracy. Hunt-and-
peck involves looking at the keys and using one or two fingers,
resulting in slower typing. Hybrid typing blends touch typing
and hunt-and-peck techniques. Thumb typing is common on
mobile devices, using thumbs primarily. Voice typing employs
speech recognition software for hands-free text input. Swype/
slide typing involves sliding a finger across an on-screen
keyboard, and alternative layouts like Dvorak aim to increase
efficiency and reduce strain.

IMPORTANCE
OF TYPING
SKILLS
KEY FOR THE DIGITAL AGE: Typing is an essential skill in today's
digital world, enabling efficient communication and productivity.

Education: Teaching typing skills equips students with a fundamental

ability crucial for academic and professional success. Incorporating
typing tutorials into the curriculum enhances students' technological
literacy and prepares them for the future.

UNDERSTAANDING THE
TYPING METHODS
INTEGRATION OF
TYPING SKILLS
Interactive Learning : Utilizing interactive typing tutorials engages
students and makes learning enjoyable.

Real-World Application : Emphasizing the practical applications of

typing skills fosters student motivation and interest.

Progress Tracking : Implementing tools to track students' typing

progress provides valuable feedback and encourages improvement.
TWO MAIN TYPES OF
METHODS
1.HUNT AND PECK
METHOD
2.TOUCH TYPING
Chapter 3
HUNT AND PECK
METHOD
This method involves using a few fingers to type, often
resulting in slower typing speed and reduced accuracy.
DISADVANTAGES:
Limited Finger Usage:
In this method, typists use only a few fingers to locate and press keys.
Reduced Speed:
Hunt-and-peck typing often leads to slower typing speed due to the
limited finger usage
Increased Errors :
Limited finger usage can result in more typing errors and reduced
accuracy.
CHALLENGES
Lack of Efficiency :
The hunt-and-peck method is less efficient compared to touch
typing, affecting productivity.

Learning Barriers :
Students using this method may face challenges in adapting to
more advanced typing tasks.

Fatigue and Strain :

Overuse of a few fingers can lead to fatigue and strain during
prolonged typing sessions.
HOW TO HUNT AND
PECK
STEP1:
Sit up straight with your elbows bent at a 90-
degree angle
Touch typing involves a lot of muscle memorization,
but it also involves good posture, too. Find a
comfortable chair that supports your back, where you
can sit upright for long periods of time. Keep your
elbows bent at right angles and curl your fingers over
the keyboard so it’s easier to type. Additionally, try to
keep your head about an arm’s length away from the
screen, while keeping your wrists straight and your
fingers curled.
Step2:

Two fingers are used to type everything you

want to in this method. No other fingers are
required to type in this method. You need to
hunt the keys and then press them. You can
practice this methodology on word or any
other software like notepad or WordPad. You
can start with complex or simple words as
remembering the keys is not important in
this method.
Chapter 4
TOUCH TYPING
METHOD
Touch typing, a technique that involves using all fingers and relying on
muscle memory, leads to faster and more accurate typing.

Advantages:
Efficiency and Speed:
Touch typing allows for faster and more efficient typing, beneficial in academic and
professional settings.

Reduced Errors:
Using all fingers reduces typing errors, leading to more accurate written work.

Long-Term Benefits:
Proficiency in touch typing provides long-term advantages in terms of productivity and
time management.
Typing Proficiency
Practice and Repetition :
Regular practice and repetition of touch-typing exercises are
essential for developing proficiency.

Ergonomic Considerations:
Emphasizing proper posture and finger placement during touch
typing practice minimizes strain and discomfort.

Progress Monitoring:
Tracking students' typing speed and accuracy allows for targeted
support and improvement.
HOW TO TOUCH TYPE
STEP2:
Curl your fingers on the “home” keys, or
“ASDF” and “JKL”
.” Meet the home keys, which are the most
important keys used during touch typing. These
will help you find your way around the keyboard.
Keep in mind that there are different home keys for
different fingers. You can identify the home row by
finding the lifted ridges on the “F” and “J” keys.
STEP3:
Find the different keys that your left hand
will touch
Divide your keyboard into different “zones,” which
will help you fine-tune your touch typing. Use your
left pointer finger to touch the “V,” “B,” “R,” “T,”
“5,” and “6” keys and your left middle finger to
touch the “E,” “C,” and “4” keys. Try to touch the
“W,” “X,” and “3” keys with your left ring finger,
while using your left pinky to touch the “Q,” “Z,”
“1,” and “2” keys.
STEP4:
Search for the keys that your right
hand will press
Use your right pointer finger to touch the
“H,” “N,” “M,” “U,” “Y, and “7” keys, then
use your right middle finger to touch the
“comma,” “I,” and “8” keys. Aim to use your
right ring finger to touch the “O,” “9,” and
“period” keys, while using your right pinky
finger to touch the “0,” “P,” “backslash,”
“apostrophe,” “minus sign,” “equal sign,”
and both bracket keys
STEP5:

Hit the spacebar with either thumb

Keep both of your thumbs perched on
top of the spacebar to make your typing
patterns more convenient. As you type,
you can use either finger to add spaces
within your sentences.
STEP6:
Type the “home” keys without looking at the
keyboard
Practice typing the home key letters while keeping
your eyes on the screen. Start with the letter “A,”
then work your way to the ending semicolon key in
the row. Once you’ve finished typing out different
combinations of these letters, look at the screen
and see how well you did. For instance, you can
type “FFFF,” “DDDD,” “SSSS,” and “AAAA” one
after the other. You can also try combinations like
“FADS,” “JKL;,” “AFDS,” and “;LKJ.”
STEP7:
Create simple words with the “E,” “R,”
“U,” and keys
Stretch your left and right pointer fingers up
to press the “U” and “R” buttons. Similarly,
use your middle fingers to touch the “I” and
E” keys. Practice typing these keys
sequentially, then typing the letters in
different combinations. Continue practicing
until you start to get the hang of which
finger goes where.
STEP8:
Set aside time each day to practice
typing
Find time each day to sit in front of your
keyboard and try a few different practice
sessions, which really help you figure out
where your fingers are supposed to go on
a keyboard. Boosting your typing skills
will really help you in the long run,
especially if you’d like to work in a
position that involves a lot of typing.
STEP9:

Download a typing program so you can

get extra practice time
Search online to see if there are any free demo
or trial copies of professional programs. These
programs can help a lot, while also offering a
whole new environment to type in. Try some
free online typing tutors that offer different
ranges of courses for all skill levels. For
instance, sites like “Typing Club,” “Rapid Typing
5” and “Typing Academy” are all great places to
get started.
