INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
• Dress code, refers to a set of rules or guidelines prescribing
the type of clothing, accessories, grooming standards, and
overall appearance expected in a particular context, such as
schools, workplaces, or social events (Kraus and Mendelson
2014).
• Ferguson and Gough (2015) found that students who adhere
to a prescribed dress code demonstrate higher levels of
focus, motivation, and participation in classroom activities.
• Undergraduate students who cultivate a habit of dressing
professionally are better equipped to navigate job
interviews, networking events, and internships, thereby
increasing their employability and career prospects (Luong,
2017).
Statement of the Problem
• The introduction of a new dress code policy at universities
is often intended to create a more professional and
disciplined academic environment.
• The effectiveness and consequences of such policies on
the dressing habits, academic performance, and overall
well-being of undergraduate students remain a subject of
debate.
• The problem lies in understanding how these dress code
policies impact various aspects of student life, including
their behavior, academic engagement, self-expression,
cultural identity, and social interactions.
• The implementation of the new dress code policy a
JOSTUM raises several critical questions.
• Addressing these questions is crucial for evaluating the
effectiveness of the dress code policy and its broader
implications.
Objective of the Study
• The objectives of this study are aim to examine the

• To Investigate whether the implementation of the new dress
code policy affects the academic performance of JOSTUM
undergraduate students.
• To Explore the cultural and social implications of the new
dress code policy on the diverse student body at JOSTUM.
• To Measure the level of compliance with the new dress code
policy among JOSTUM undergraduate students.
• To Identify best practices for effectively implementing and
enforcing the new dress code

Significance of the Study
• The study on the implementation of a new dress code
policy and its impact on the dressing habits of
undergraduate students holds significant importance for
multiple stakeholders, including university administrators,
faculty, students, and policymakers.
• The findings of this study will provide valuable insights
into the effectiveness of dress code policies in higher
education settings and their broader implications for
student behavior, academic performance, cultural
expression, and campus culture.
Scope of the Study
• The study will be restricted to JOSTUM undergraduate
students.
• This study will be restricted to 200 level and 300 level , SSS
2 and SSS 3 students

Methodology
Research Design
• This study will employ a qualitative research methods to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the research objectives.
Area of Study
• The study area for this research covers Makurdi, Makurdi is located
in Benue State, located in the middle belt region of Nigeria.
Population and Sample
• The target population includes undergraduate students in JOSTUM,
Benue state, with a focus on 200 and 300 level students in JOSTUM.
Sample Size and Sampling Techniques
• A sample size of 200 undergraduate students from various
department will be selected using a multi-stage sampling technique.
• Purposive selection of undergraduate students, random sampling
will be use
Instrument for Data Collection
• The instrument for data collection will be a structured
Validation of Instrument
• The instrument for data collection, which is questionnaire, will be
subjected to face validation by three experts from the Department
of Home Science and Management, JOSTUM.
Method of data collection
• Primary data for the study will be use to structure a questionnaire,
this will be administered by hand to the respondents with the help
of two research assistants at the school, explanation of the
questionnaire items will be made on the spot to ensure that the
respondents understand the questions and respond appropriately.
Method of data analysis
• Data obtained was analyzed by means (). Research question 1,2
and 3 were analyzed using means (). A criterion mean of 2.50 wil
be used to decide the acceptance level. All means that are equal
to or greater that 2.50 wI'll be accepted while mean below 2.50
wI'll rejected
