Inputs for EDG Design
-Generator Sizing calculation issued by Electrical based on the maximum
load (including necessary power Factor) for the Consumers
• Consumers are the ones considered to be supplied by the EDG
Emergency Diesel Generators are
-not considered for continuous operation
-required only in case of Power outage from the Main Power supply
source.
In EDG
- Equipment discipline is the RFQ owner
- Diesel engine by Equipment discipline and Generator by Electrical

International Standards for EDG and Shell DEPs
In addition to Company specific Standards and Shell DEPs, EDGs are
normally Designed and Tested in accordance with ISO 8528-1 to 13.
• ISO 8528-1 : Reciprocating internal combustion engine driven alternating current generating sets -
Part 1: Application, ratings and performance
• ISO 8528-2 : Part 2 : Engines
• ISO 8528-3 : Part 3 : Alternating current generators for generating
• ISO 8528-5 : Part 5 : Generating Sets
• ISO 8528-6 : Part 6 : Test Methods
• ISO 8528-9 & 10 : For Vibration and Noise Respectively
Shell Standards applicable for QP Projects
• DEP 33.65.11.31-Gen : Synchronous AC Machines
• DEP 31.29.80.30-Gen : Spark ignited and compression ignited engines
• DEP 33.65.11.32-Gen : Packaged alternating current generator sets

Diesel Engine
 Diesel Engines are the Prime Mover in a Diesel Generator, which are predominantly used for lesser
Generator capacities (approx. less than 1200 kVA).
 Other alternate driver available is Gas Engines, when there is any abundance in the Gas supply.
However, this type of Drivers are not envisaged for Emergency purpose, but for Continuous power
supply.
 Critical components of a Diesel Engine for a safe and efficient functioning
 Air and Fuel injection system (with necessary filters)
 Turbocharger for Air intake utilizing the Engine Exhaust
 Radiator or Engine Cooling system (for Engine and Air intake after Turbocharger)
 Air or Fuel Shut-off valve for over speed trip or any eventual Engine troubles to prevent from complete damage
 Speed Governors (Electronic type)
 Explosion Relief Device for the Crank Case
 Reputed Engine suppliers for the EDG (also complete Package suppliers in some cases)
 Cummins Inc.
 Caterpillar
 Mitsubishi
 Man Diesel & Turbo SE

Alternator/ Generator
 The power Generating component in the EDG is the Alternator
 The capacities are defined in kVA at specific Hz
 Below are the reputed Generator suppliers for the EDG
 Stamford (AvK)
 Caterpillar (CAT)
 Mitsubishi
 Man Diesel & Turbo SE
 Leroy Somer
 Marathon Electric

Main Diesel Storage Tank / Diesel Day Tank
 Main Diesel Storage tanks store and supply Diesel fuel to all users in plant including EDG. These are
not part of the EDG package supplier’s scope.
 Diesel Day tank is dedicated to each Diesel Generator. Diesel fuel is supplied to Diesel Engine and
returned back into Diesel Day tank. Day tank can be filled by main Diesel storage Tank or directly
from Diesel trucks.
 Diesel Day tank is sized for 8 hrs / 24 hrs or as per company specific requirement of continuous
operation of EDG
 Diesel Day tanks can be integral part of EDG skid or separate, depending upon EDG rating. Integrated
day tank is part of the baseplate with necessary provision for vent, drain, filling etc.
 Separate Diesel Day tank is mounted separately adjacent to the Genset based on the space
availability at site
 Diesel Day tanks shall be provided with the minimum nozzles or instruments connections as below
- Fuel Supply and Return connection to the Engine
- Fuel Fill with valve and Quick connector based on the type of Supply
- Vent with flame arrestor and Drain
- Manhole
- Level Transmitter and Indicator
- Spare connections (Minimum 2)

Diesel Engine Starting system
 Battery Starting System:
- This is predominantly the primary starting system.
- The battery banks are provided with 1 Working + 1 standby configuration.
- The batteries are charged either by external power source or by the Engine itself (charging kit are
part of EDG package vendor supply). DC conversion of power is also part of package vendor scope
for the charging.
- Battery sizing is based on the number of starts required (6 starts is standard)

 Pneumatic Charging System:

- This is used as a Secondary starting system in case the Engine failed to start with the available
batteries.
- Pneumatic Starting system is preferred starting system over hydraulic starting system when there
is compressed air already available in excess. A storage accumulator is provided in this case.
- For standalone Pneumatic starting system, dedicated compressor is required. In some cases, the
compressor is also provided with Diesel Engine drive to facilitate operation under power failure.

Diesel Engine Starting system
 Hydraulic Starting System:
- Hydraulic Starting systems are used when compressed air is not available.
- The hydraulic accumulator is automatically recharged with a Diesel Driven pump (within 15
minutes)
- A hand pump is additionally provided for charging the accumulator.
- In special case, for redundancy, additional charging pump either electrically powered or
compressed air system will be considered for recharging the Hydraulic Actuator.

Sound Attenuators
 Engine Exhaust Silencers or Mufflers:
- These are in-line silencing devices provided on the Engine exhaust, where the noise levels are more
than 120 dbA.
- There are different grades of silencer based on the area of installation. Each type will have a
specific reduction in the noise (15 to 30 dBA approximately)
a) Industrial Grade
b) Residential Grade
c) Hospital Grade
d) Super Critical Grade and Super Extreme grades are designs with reduction of upto 60 dBA.

Acoustic Enclosures
 Noise Blankets or Enclosures:
When the overall EDG package noise is above the specified limits, either the noise source is blanketed,
or the complete package is placed inside a noise enclosure.
Noise enclosures are provided when the EDG is located in a manned area (open) without a dedicate
closed EDG building, and the noise levels are exceeding 85 dBA at 1m.
Noise Enclosures are provided for the complete package where, necessary access space and access
doors are considered for Human entry into the Enclosure when the package is not under operation.
When noise enclosures are provided, the below requirements are to be ensured for the safe operation of
the EDG
- Fresh Air intake and Ventilation to facilitate Fresh Air supply for the engine combustion
- Fire and Gas detector for the enclosure and associated fire fighting system.
- Powder type fire extinguisher or Fire sprinklers dedicated for the enclosure shall also be
provided
- Louvers to retain the IP rating of the enclosure (which are motorized to operate along with the
EDG)
- Silencer banks in the enclosure
BASICS OF EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR (EDG) 15
EDG inside a Building
 will not require any Acoustic Enclosure by the Package Vendor.
 All the requirements, as in case of Acoustic enclosure will be applicable for
this Building
 Air intake and ventilation shall be provided for the building (With sand trap
Louver or Louvers with additional Filter based on the Environmental
conditions)
 Fire detection and Fire Extinguishing systems shall be provided based on
the Local Safety Regulations
 For maintenance, handling equipment such as EOT crane shall also be
considered, and necessary beams shall be provided inside the building.

a) The degree of ingress protection of the enclosures for a generator and for its
auxiliaries intended for outdoor installation shall be at least IP 55.
b) The enclosure shall provide a degree of ingress protection at least equal to IP 41 if
the panels are to be installed in an enclosed building.
c) The degree of ingress protection shall be at least IP 55 if the panels are for
