Ambiguity in translation

1) Definition

• “Ambiguity is the presence of two or more meanings in a word, phrase, sentence


or passage” (Cushing 1994, 7).

• (Sự mơ hồ xảy ra khi một từ, một câu hay một đoạn văn có thể được hiểu hay
diễn giải với ít nhất 2 nghĩa khác nhau).
2) Classification

• Lexical and Semantic ambiguity


• (Sự tối nghĩa gây ra do sự đa nghĩa của từ vựng)
• Different meanings emerge as a result of there being more than one meaning for
an individual word (Cushing 1994, 8).

• Structural ambiguity
• (Sự tối nghĩa gây ra do cấu trúc câu)
• Different meanings emerge from the differences in how the grammar of [a] phrase
or sentence is analyzed (Cushing 1994, 8).
3) How to solve

• Translation problems involving ambiguity can be solved by additional contextual


information (thông tin ngữ cảnh bổ sung)

• Xét ví dụ: Câu Flying planes can be dangerous, có thể diễn dịch rõ ràng hơn nhờ
thông tin in đậm.

• Flying planes can be dangerous, especially when you are not trained as a pilot.

• Flying planes can be dangerous, especially when you are a regular air-traveler.

• Flying planes can be dangerous, especially you house is near the runway. (3)
