Victory on Everest

• Climatic condition that makes Everest climbing difficult.

Everest climbing is a daring adventure. It is the highest peak in the
world. As people go climbing, they have to face a very cold climate.
There are the invisible weapons of nature. Winds of one hundred miles
per hour make people lose their appetites and abilities to relax. The
climbers lose their strength and spirit.
2. What were the professions of the 13 climbers who made an attempt
to climb Everest in 1953?
Ans: The climbers of the year 1953 were of different professions. Two
of them were teachers, three were scientists, and two others were
army men. There was also a travel agent, a photographer, and a
beekeeper. There were also three physicians.
Climbers preparing themselves for
climbing to their fifth camp
The climbers had a flexible schedule. They had three full weeks practice. They
practised climbs and general conditioning. They used the Swiss routes and
camp sites. The porters and climbers did a great deal of moving back and
forth. The made themselves familiar with carrying loads and helping
themselves in the peak conditions . Hillary and Tenzing, working as a team,
once climbed from the Khumbu Glacier to the advance base in a single day.
• The climbers maintaining communication among such a big group of people
Ans: The climbers maintained communication among such a big group of
people by using portable radio telephone. Inspite of the storms and minor
mishaps, the device worked well and they could continue their climbing.
Route the climbers took to Everest
and the Reason
The climbers took the south east route to Everest because it was the
safest route that the second Swiss group had followed after their accident
in another route.
• Difference between closed-circuit apparatus and open-circuit
apparatus used by the climbers .
The climbers used two types of apparatus. The closed-circuit apparatus
let the users breath only oxygen, where as the open circuit apparatus
would mix oxygen with open air. They were not much sure which would
work better, but they were far better than the Swiss apparatus used
earlier because they could be used while the climbers were actually in
motion.
what the climbers noticed when they reached 28,720
feet and recount the experience of their feeling.

When the climbers reached the altitude of 28,720 feet, they saw a
sight which no human eyes had ever seen before. Before them was a
formidable part of the peak. It was not encouraging for them. The last
few hundred feet of Everest soared up in a steep and savage pinnacle of
rock and ice. They were not sure whether it was climbable. If they
attempted climbing, perhaps they would go out of their strength and
oxygen.
How they felt when the two Tensing and Hillary were
successful to reach Everest

When they finally reached the summit of Everest, they felt that they
were indomitable. First, they felt a relief because they didn't have any
more to climb. There were no more steps to climb. And soon, the relief
was followed by joy and pride. They realized that their dreams, hope
and aspiration had come true. However, the feeling of pride was duly
followed by humility and gratitude
The journey when they descended
from Everest
Their journey from the summit back to the camp was again very
dangerous. It was their race against time, tiredness and decreasing
oxygen. Yet, they had to be very careful and cautious. They climbed
down very slowly, step by step. They had a determination to return
alive with their victory. On the way, they picked up the extra oxygen
cylinders that had been left by their friends. At two o'clock they came
back to camp IX. Here, they rested for a while and had a hot drink. They
gathered up their equipment, and started off again. They managed to
come back to col to embrace their friends before evening.
