What is, There is and There
Are?
There is and There are used to indicate the
presence of something in a specific place, the
location of objects or their quantity. In this structure,
the word there acts as a formal subject and has no
meaning.
For Example….
There is a mouse in the kitchen! – ¡Hay un ratón en la
cocina!
There are some cookies in the box. – Hay algunas galletas
en la caja.
There was a man in the room. – Había un hombre en la
habitación.
I think there will be a lot of people at tomorrow’s concert. –
Creo que habrá mucha gente en el concierto de mañana.
In the Sentences afirmative…
In affirmative sentences, we always begin with the formal
subject there, followed by the verb to be in the appropriate
form and the "real subject" (object or person).
The form of the verb to be depends on the number of the
noun and the tense in the sentence.
REMEMBER….
There is and there was are used for singular objects or
concepts or uncountable nouns.
There are and there were are used for the plural of
objects.
For Example:
Lets see again..
If there are several objects..
a numeral is used that indicates their quantity or the word some.
Before uncountable nouns some is also used.
There are two cats in our garden. – Hay dos gatos en nuestro jardín.
There are some cats in our garden. – Hay algunos gatos en nuestro jardín.
There's some milk in the fridge. – Hay algo de leche en el refrigerador.
There was some food in this lunchbox. – Había algo de comida en esta
lonchera.
Now in Negative
Negative sentences with there is / there are are formed
by using the negative particle not after the verb to be in the
corresponding form.
In negation with there is not / there was not / there will not
be, singular nouns are used with an indefinite article a / an
(without negative pronouns, since in English there can only
be one negation).
For Example
There wasn't a cat in our garden. – No había
ningún gato en nuestro jardín.
There won't be a party next week. – No habrá una
fiesta la próxima semana.
.
In negative sentences, plural nouns or uncountable nouns are
used with the pronoun any.
There is not = there isn't (contraction)
There isn't any money in his wallet. – There is no money in your
wallet.
There are not = there aren't
There aren't any pencils on my desk. – There are no pencils on
my desk
.
In the negation after there is not / there was not / there will
not be the pronouns anybody, anyone (someone, nobody)
and anything (something, nothing) can be used .
There isn't anyone in the room. –
There wasn't anything interesting in that city. –
